So... yeah. A brand new "Friday the 13th" video game. That alone creates a buzz of excitement in the air. Personally, I love the "Friday the 13th" franchise of films and Jason is my favorite slasher icon. There is one little problem the game needs to overcome at this time and that is where you come in. It needs help with funding in order to bring Jason back to life once again. The game has a page set up on Kickstarter and the fans are obviously hungry for the chance to play as a counselor or as Jason...yeah, you can also play as Jason. Sounds awesome right? Well, it gets better. Wait until you visit the page and see all who is involved in this project. Don't want to wait? Okay, I'll spill the beans on a couple names. How about Kane Hodder and Tom Savini. Yep. Kane Hodder, the man who donned the costume more than anyone else and most fans favorite person to ever portray Jason. Tom Savini, who did the amazing practical effects in "Friday the 13th" and "Friday the 13th: the Final Chapter" along with many other films. Holy sh...wow. 88 Films posted an update on their upcoming release.
"Our first announcement is actually an apology. We have had to put Nightmare in a Damaged Brain back a few weeks as we have been trying to obtain a sample of a newly created answer print scan.
This finally came through today and it looks fantastic so we've decided to go ahead and make a NEW HD Master. This will be done very soon and we will be able to give a firm final release date in the next couple of weeks.
Thank you for your patience and we really hope you like the new transfer." Few slasher classics have proven to be more controversial than Romano Scavolini's sicko slice 'em up epic horror film, "Nightmares in a Damaged Brain!"

UK Distributor 88 Films will be bringing the 1991 horror comedy, "Bloodsucking Pharaohs in Pittsburgh" to Blu-ray on October 5, 2015. The movie will be part of their "Slasher Classics Collection." The 88 Films Blu-ray will feature reversible cover art, pictured above.
In the same satirical spirit as "Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers" (1988) or "Student Bodies" (1981), comes 1991's esoterically entertaining splatter send-up "Bloodsucking Pharaohs in Pittsburgh."
Proving that a madwoman can be far more threatening than a madman, "Bloodsucking Pharaohs in Pittsburgh" introduces us to a weapon-wielding femme-fatale who is dedicated to lopping off limbs and chalking up a high body count in the name of an ancient religious cult. With his hedge clippers in hand, he terrorizes the camp and systematically mutilates each victim. Can a few courageous campers save themselves and destroy this demented madman before he kills them all?
Starring Brian Matthews (Crime Stopper), Leah Ayres (Bloodsport), Brian Backer (Fast Times At Ridgemont High), Larry Joshua (Dances With Wolves) and featuring early film appearances by Fisher Stevens (Short Circuit), Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) and Holly Hunter (Raising Arizona). I had never heard of or seen "The Burning" until sometime after it started airing on MGM HD. The film was never at my local mom and pop video store or even at Blockbuster Video. So I was in for a real treat when I was finally able to watch it. That raft scene. Wow. One huge plus for the film is it features the awesome practical effects of the legend, Tom Savini. Buying the DVD when it was released was an easy choice as was upgrading to the Blu-ray when it came out. A fun 80's slasher that should not be missed. Watching the film for the first time, it was neat seeing the future Hollywood stars in the movie. It is still fun to see them. Hopefully this Blu-ray brings the film more attention and introduces a whole new generation to the legend of Cropsy.
AUDIO:
The sole audio option for this release is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono track. The audio sounds pretty good. Balance between the dialogue, Rick Wakeman's great score and the sound effects, sounded fine. I did not notice any issues with the audio like drop outs or hissing. I don't think Scream Factory could have done much better with the present audio. There are optional English SDH subtitles included as well.
VIDEO:
"The Burning" slashes its way on to Blu-ray thanks to Scream Factory. The film is presented in 1080p with a 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. Fans should be pleased with how well the video quality turned out. The film had aired on the television channel MGM HD several years earlier and the film had a DVD release, so fans had been waiting and hoping for the film to come to Blu-ray. The DVD looked very good but this is definitely an upgrade. Colors look great with a rich saturation. The skin tones in the film look very natural. There is also a nice thin layer of grain present which does get a little heavier in certain scenes, but I never found it to be overwhelming in any way. Black levels are adequate as well. There is a fair amount of fine detail present in close up shots. There are some minor white specks that appear sporadically during the film but never to the point of being distracting. Overall, the film looks great.

In addition to the following features, a region 1 DVD is also included in this combo pack. The cover art is also reversible.
Audio Commentary #1 - This track features Director Tony Maylam and international journalist, Alan Jones. This track is more informative from a technical viewpoint. Mr. Maylan discusses many topics involving the film including Cropsy's shears, the nude scenes, working with Tom Savini, the cast, the films setting and the infamous raft scene.
Audio Commentary #2 - This track features actresses Bonnie Deroski and Shelley Bruce along with moderator Edwin Samuelson of The CineFiles. This is a fairly entertaining track despite neither of the actresses playing a main character in the film. The pair seem to have fond memories of their time making the movie. They share some fun and interesting stories about the cast. Edwin Samuelson does a fair job of keeping the conversation going with questions for the ladies. Blood 'N' Fire Memories (18:01) - A really good featurette with Tom Savini talking about the practical effects and death scenes that appear in the film. He explains a bit about how the burn scene from the beginning of the film was done as well as the terrific raft scene. A must watch for fans.
Slash & Cut (12:04) - An interview with Editor Jack Sholder. Mr. Sholder talks about various scenes in the film. He says he didn't think "The Burning" was a good film and didn't think there was anything particularly original about it. Though he did think the film was well made.
Cropsy Speaks (11:19) - An interview with actor Lou David. He talks about how he became interested in acting as well as how he was filming the day after his son was born. It isn't too hard to tell that Mr. David would have liked there to have been a sequel to the film. I think most fans would agree with him. Summer Camp Nightmare (6:45) - This features an interview with actress Leah Ayres (Michelle). She talks about her start in acting and some experiences on and off the set during the films production.
Behind the Scenes Footage (7:56) - Viewers get to see some similar footage that appears in the Tom Savini interview, but more of it. Fans interested in the effects used in the film should watch this.

IN CONCLUSION:
A Blu-ray that looks and sounds great. It also has some terrific special features included. This is a must own 'Collector's Edition' from Scream Factory, if you are a slasher fan or even a horror fan. The movie itself is good too. Scream Factory did a very nice job with this release that should easily please fans of the film.

AUDIO:
Blue Underground's Blu-ray features three English audio tracks; DTS-HD MA 7.1, Dolby Digital 5.1 EX, and Dolby Digital Original Mono. I'm a bit old fashioned or as some call us, purists, in that I prefer the original audio tracks over new mixes. I have nothing against new remixes and some sound good. It's just a matter of preference. All tracks sounded fine with most of the sound coming from the center and front right and left speakers. Dialogue sounded fine as did the score and sound effects.
VIDEO:
"The Prowler" arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Blue Underground. The film is presented in 1080p with a 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The film looks good overall. As usual, brighter scenes fare better than those that are darker in nature. There is a nice layer of grain for most of the film except in darker scenes where it is a bit heavier. Colors are mostly subdued and flat, giving the film a look that makes it seem older than it actually is. That's not a complaint though or necessarily a detriment to the film. The picture has a bit of softness to it that may be inherent in the original materials. Skin tones look fine for the most part but they too are a bit flat in tone. Fine detail as usual, is more evident in bright, close up shots as opposed to the wider shots in the film. There are some instances of bloom (thanks wikipedia/google search for the term) mainly with the lights in the scenes from the 'past' like the lights on the bridge and gazebo. As a said, the overall video quality is good and it should be pleasing enough for fans.

Commentary Track - Director/Producer Joseph Zito and Special Make-up Effects Artist Tom Savini do a great job at entertaining the listener in this commentary. They cover everything from stories about the cast, details of death scenes, information on the shooting locations and much more. Listening to them talk, joke, reminisce and just have a good old time makes this even easier to enjoy.
Tom Savini's Behind the Scenes Gore Footage (9:34) - Here viewers get to see, as the title of the piece says, a behind the scene look at footage of gore from the film. You get an idea of the amount of time and effort it can take to get the right shot in a death scene.

IN CONCLUSION:
"The Prowler" which features effects by Tom Savini is a must see for slasher fans and general horror fans as well. With CGI becoming more prevalent and practical effects going by the wayside, there aren't many opportunities to see 'old school' effects outside of independent films anymore. So fans should check this film out if they have not already, even if it is only to admire Tom Savini's work, which is great. However, the film has more going for it with a killer who implores an unusual weapon of choice, a pitchfork. Yes, other weapons are used as well, but the pitchfork is always a fun one to see and you get to see it a few times here. With good audio and video and a couple nice extras as well, this should be on a lot of shelves.
