THE FILM [ 2 / 5 ]:

Tommy "Tiny" Lister ("The Dark Knight") stars with Obba Babatunde ("The Silence of the Lambs") in this suspenseful tale of murder, magic, and revenge. It all begins with an anonymous text inviting a dozen people to a party. The young men and women gather, eat, drink, and have the time of their lives inside the doors of a dilapidated mansion. That is, until it's time to go. The front door doesn't open. The back door doesn't open. Doors that once led to familiar rooms now lead to new ones. Some doors open to yet other doors, and some go straight to dead ends. Only one thing is constant: Every door is a trap, and there's only one way out.

For me, the tagline was appropriate for the film. It indeed was a party I wanted to miss. The premise sounded interesting and gave me hope that this might be a little gem of a film. It was not terrible. It just wasn't very good. I feel that the downfall of the film was the story. People often complain that a movie takes too long to really get going. Good news, "Death's Door" wastes little time jumping in to the action. The problem with that is we know next to nothing about the characters in the film. It's basically, some anonymous men and women trapped inside a house. You might be hard pressed to remember the names of more than two of the characters at the end of the film, unless you really make it a point to focus on memorizing them. We know very little about them and they unfortunately mean nothing to us, so when they die, we don't really care.

The ending of the movie felt like a move that was made due to the budget being spent. If the eventual plot, when revealed in the film sounds familiar, you'll probably be reminded of "House on Haunted Hill" (1999). The original may have had the exact same plot as the remake but it's been a long time since I watched the original so I can't say for sure. Anyhow, if the film makers had followed suit and killed off more of the characters throughout the film, it would have definitely been an improvement.

On the plus side, I thought most of the actors in the film did a fine job in their roles. That certainly helped make the film more enjoyable. The effects used in the film looked good as well. There were some nice camera shots used in the film and it also had some effective music. With a better script, this could have been a pretty good film.

Death's Door DVD still

AUDIO [ 4 / 5 ]:

A Dolby Digital 2.0 track is the only option available on the DVD. It does a great job conveying the dialogue, sound effects and score for the film, which were also well balanced. Sound levels seemed to be stable throughout the movie. The dialog could have been a little clearer in a few places but other than that, I thought the audio was fine.

VIDEO [ 3.5 / 5 ]:

"Death's Door" comes to DVD thanks to MVD Entertainment. The film is presented in Anamorphic Widescreen with a 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio. For a low budget independent film, the video quality it pretty good. You can see a fair amount of fine detail in well lit close up shots. The colors in the film had a robust look to them. Black levels looked good and skin tones looked very natural in appearance. I did not notice any problems with the video. The layer change for the DVD seemed to have occurred around the 1:22:12 mark in the film. I like to mention that just in case someone buys the DVD and wonders if theirs is defective as not everyone is aware of layer changes.

Death's Door DVD still

SPECIAL FEATURES [ 1 / 5 ]:

"Shorty Wassup" Music Video (4:12)

Behind the Scenes Featurette (7:17) - This featurette includes brief interviews with director Kennedy Goldsby and several members of the cast. They discuss shooting the film in the house and how uncomfortable they were, feeling that the house was truly haunted.

IN CONCLUSION:

Even though I did not really enjoy the film all that much, I was never bored by it, which is always a plus and something I can't say for every film that I watch. The DVD sports nice audio and video quality, which is always great since it can be a real chore to sit through anything if it looks and/or sounds bad. If you like supernatural films involving haunted houses or ghosts, you may want to give this one a shot. As of the date of this review, the price below for the DVD is fairly cheap. I'm sure some of you out there will really enjoy the film. That's the beauty of everyone having different opinions.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

  • Gag Reel
  • Behind the Scenes (Bloodsucking Bastards on Set)
  • Audio Commentary with Dr. God comedy troupe including Director Brian James O’Connell, Producer/Actor Justin Ware,, Writer/Actor Sean Cowhig, Actor Neil W. Garguilo and Actor David F. Park

The horror-comedy boasts an all-star cast including Fran Kranz (Cabin in the Woods), Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones), Emma Fitzpatrick (Significant Mother, The Collection), Yvette Yates (Inherent Vice) with Joel Murray (Mad Men) and Joey Kern (Cabin Fever, Super Troopers).

SYNOPSIS:
An "Office Space" meets "Shaun of the Dead" action-packed horror comedy, "Bloodsucking Bastards" stars Fran Kranz as Evan Sanders, a low-level, dutiful employee stuck in a boring job at a soul-killing every corporation. Evan’s the kind of guy who does all the work and gets none of the credit, but at least he gets to spend his days with his beautiful co-worker/girlfriend Amanda and his slacker best friend Tim, so he soldiers on in the hope of one day getting his coveted sales director position.

Unfortunately, it all falls apart in one fell swoop when Amanda breaks up with him and Evan’s boss Ted hands his promotion to his college nemesis Max . And it isn’t just their sordid past Evan has to deal with. After his fellow office mates start going through disturbing changes (which, paradoxically, make them better employees) and bodies begin to pile up, Evan learns the horrible truth: Max is a vampire. And even worse… a vamp with a plan.

"Bloodsucking Bastards" takes audiences on a hilarious, blood-spattered roller coaster ride in the most terrifying locale of all: the American workplace. Evan must find a way to stop the evil brewing amidst the cubicles, expose Max as the bloodsucking bastard that he is, win back Amanda, and save his pals before his life and career go from dead-end… to just dead.

88 Films Bringing Four More Horror Titles To HD!

Creepshow 2 The Suckling Flesh Eating Mothers Evilspeak Blu-ray

Here are 4 more horror titles that will hopefully be on your shelves in early 2016.

Creepshow 2, Evilspeak (with a new Graham Humphreys sleeve), Flesh Eating Mothers and The Suckling will be coming to Blu-ray.

Dates and details TBC

As you can see, very little in the way of news on the releases at this time. However, here is some information on each movie in case you are unfamiliar with any of them.

Creepshow 2

The rotting Creep himself is back with three new gruesome tales of horror that will make your skin crawl: a cigar store wooden Indian comes to life to avenge the store owner's brutal murder at the hands of three punks in “Ol’ Chief Woodenhead." Then four teenagers become the target of a terrifying, man-eating oil slick in "The Raft." The chills continue with "The Hitchhiker," the chilling tale of a woman who keeps running into, and over, the same mutilated man on a lonely road. Prepare for a terrifying roller coaster ride from the masters of horror!

Evilspeak

Things suck for Stanley Coopersmith (Clint Howard). He's a welfare student for a military school and is basically at the bottom of the pecking order. One day it all changes when he is given a punishment duty of cleaning the academy's chapel's basement. There he discovers belongings of late Father Esteban Lorenzo, who was executed for Satanism in the 16th century. Coopersmith then starts studying Lorenzo's material and later uses his newly gained power to turn the tables against his tormentors.

The Suckling

A woman goes to a back alley abortion clinic, only to have her aborted fetus attack her, her boyfriend, and everyone else at the clinic.

Flesh Eating Mothers

A venereal disease turns an entire town of two-timing mothers into cannibals!

Queen Crab - DVD Review - Wild Eye Releasing

Did someone order crab legs?

Queen Crab DVD cover

Released by: Wild Eye Releasing
Release Date: September 29, 2015
Production Year: 2015
Region Code: 0 NTSC
Running Time: 1:20:41
Audio: English Dolby Digital 2.0
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78 Aspect Ratio)
Subtitles: None

THE FILM [ 3 / 5 ]:

A meteor crashes into a quiet lake in the remote countryside, awakening a centuries-old beast. She emerges from the deep and tears through a nearby town and its inhabitants. The humans must fight for their lives and stop this Queen Crab before she can hatch an army of babies that will overrun the entire world.

"Queen Crab" is a the type of fun movie you typically find on the Syfy channel. The acting is not always particularly good and some of the effects are questionable, but that isn't why you watch these sort of films to begin with, is it? We have a wacky movie about a giant crab running amok, terrorizing the locals. That spells fun times ahead. Well, for the viewers but not so much for the locals.

The film starts out with a young Melissa (Liberty Asbury) and her parents. Her father (Mark Polonia, "Splatter Farm") is a busy scientist. Melissa is mostly neglected by her parents and when she comes across a little crab, she quickly forms a bond with it and calls it Pee Wee. After an accident, Melissa's parents are killed and she must then live with her uncle (Ken Van Sant, "Peter Rottentail"). The film fast forwards to an adult Melissa (Michelle Miller, "The Unwanted") who we learn is still friends with Pee Wee, only Pee Wee is not so small anymore and has a much larger appetite.

Queen Crab still

AUDIO [ 3 / 5 ]:

The "Queen Crab" DVD sports a Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track. The audio sounds good overall. However, there are several instances where an actor or actress sounds very tinny in a particular scene. It would seem to be the result of the budget and filming instead of an issue with the DVD. Otherwise, I did not notice any other problems with the audio. I thought the balance of dialogue, sound effects and score was handled well.

VIDEO [ 3.5 / 5 ]:

"Queen Crab" rises from the depths on to DVD courtesy of Wild Eye Releasing. The film is presented in 1.78:1 Anamorphic Widescreen. The video quality on the DVD looked pretty good considering the low budget for this indie sci-fi horror film. There is a fair amount of detail present in some of the close-up shots. The colors looked bold and black levels looked fine except in some darker scenes where the quality dipped, as one would expect. Skin tones had a natural appearance.

Queen Crab still

SPECIAL FEATURES [ 3 / 5 ]:

Audio Commentary - This commentary track features producer Mark Polonia, writer and director Brett Piper, actor Steve Diasparra and technician Anthony Polonia. The first thing you will notice when listening to this is that the volume for Mark Polonia is much higher than the volume for the other participants. It is a pretty fun commentary track and the participants do a good job of keeping the entertaining conversation going.

Bloopers (4:02) - Some pretty funny bloopers at the actors expense.

Behind the Scenes: Queen Crab Consequences (7:31) - A humorous behind the scenes look at what went in to the making of the film and 'working' with the Queen Crab.

Behind the Scenes: Queen Crab Conversations (7:40) - Actors Rich Lounello (Sonny) and A.J. DeLucia (Stewart) and Michelle Miller (Melissa) talk about their roles and the fun they had on set while making "Queen Crab."

Behind the Scenes: Composing the Queen (5:41) - Features an interview with Jon Greathouse, the composer for the film. He discusses what goes in to creating the score for a film.

Triclops Trailer (0:49)

Dark Sleep Trailer (1:17)

Jurassic Prey Trailer (0:55)

Trailers - There is also a Trailers section you can access from the Main Menu which includes trailers for the following films:

  • "Raiders of the Lost Shark"
  • "The Amazing Bulk"
  • "Queen Crab"
  • "The Mothman Curse"
  • "Swamphead"
  • "They Will Outlive Us All"
  • "Paranormal Halloween"
  • "American Poltergeist"

IN CONCLUSION:

"Queen Crab" is a pretty fun and cheesy movie if you give it a proper chance. But you can't go in to it expecting the latest Hollywood blockbuster. This film was made cheaply and while it shows, it was also made with the dedication of the cast and crew, who do a lot while not getting a lot in return. The DVD features pretty good audio and video quality and a few nice extras as well. If you enjoy the creature feature type films that the Syfy channel normally airs, then "Queen Crab" should be right up your alley. Plus I have always appreciated stop-motion since the first time I was in awe of Ray Harryhausen's legendary work. So that was a nice tough as well.

70's Slasher, Drive-In Massacre, coming to Blu-ray from 88 Films

Wanna go to the drive-in tonight?

Drive-in Massacre Blu-ray cover

88 Films announced today that they plan to bring the 1977 slasher film, "Drive-in Massacre" to Blu-ray in early 2016.

A year before the slasher boom really hit its stride with John Carpenter's legendary trendsetter "Halloween," there was "Drive-in Massacre" - an early slice and dice prototype that is finally achieving its rightful reappraisal courtesy of a brand new 2k scan from the splatter movie addicts at 88 Films! This worldwide HD debut indicates that "Drive-in Massacre" was, in many ways, ahead of its time - spinning a sleazy story about a clueless police investigation into a madman who is carving up spectators at outdoor cinemas across California! Introducing the sort of giallo framework that the post-"Friday the 13th" teenkill genre would later take as its own, "Drive-in Massacre" was directed with the expert grindhouse touch of Stu Segall, the man who oversaw Marilyn Chambers in "Insatiable" (1980) before producing such hit TV series as "Renegade." A lively and lacerating bout of lunatic slasher energy, 88 Films is proud to give "Drive-in Massacre" its worldwide Blu-ray bow in a new transfer approved by Segall himself!

Sleepaway Camp 2 and 3 coming to Blu-ray from 88 Films

88 Films releasing two Sleepaway Camp sequels

Sleepaway Camp II Blu-ray cover

Back in the heyday of horror franchises, one little slasher classic changed the gore-game entirely - 1988's body count bonanza "Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers."

Long before Wes Craven's masterful" Scream" (1996) turned the slice and dice trend on its head with its sense of pastiche and postmodern references, "Sleepaway Camp II" was nodding its noggin towards everything from "A Nightmare on Elm Street" to "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" with genre in-jokes galore. In this suitably satirical sequel to 1983's gender-bending original flick, the great Pamela Springsteen (sister of Bruce!) headlines as the puritanical Angela Johnson, returning to murderous form as a summer camp counselor who can't wait to drill, drown and destroy an entire backwoods full of frisky teenagers and stuffy colleagues. With some winning eighties mullets, a likable final girl in the beautiful Renée Estevez ("Intruder") and guts-to-the-ground gruesome special effects, "Sleepaway Camp II" is one of the finest fear follow-ups of all time! Finally released in all of its HD horror, 88 Films is proud to present one of the defining VHS hits of its era.

Extras and details to be confirmed.
(Coming Early 2016)

Sleepaway Camp III Blu-ray cover

The death and destruction continues in 1989's darkly comedic, and thoroughly demented, sequel "Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland."

Once again returning as the riotous Angela Johnson, star Pamela Springsteen just cannot seem to keep away from summer camp carnage - this time going undercover as a teen-refugee seeking some solace and understanding from a pleasant old backwoods retreat. Alas, when she only finds sexed up teens and party-happy adults, her sense of virginal duty is called into action and she begins tidying up the trash. Using everything from a lawnmower to a firecracker to a gun, our wise-cracking anti-heroine soon loses count of the corpses - although a final homage to "The Most Dangerous Game" gives her last survivors a sporting shot at making it out of the woods alive. Released at the tail-end of the slice and dice terror-trope movement, and co-starring the great Michael J Pollard ("House of 1000 Corpses"), "Sleepaway Camp III" is pure eighties mayhem - and one of the most malevolent macabre movies ever unleashed!

Finally carving its way back to UK shelves, this is the HD horror sequel you have all been waiting for!

Conrad Radzoff (Ferdy Mayne) was the biggest name in horror movies for decades until, one day, he died of a heart attack. Determined to celebrate his life, and death, the members of a local horror film society steal his freshly buried corpse and decide to host a party, in his honor, at their old and lavish mansion. Unaware that Radzoff’s interest in horror extended beyond the silver screen and into the black arts, his corpse is soon re-animated and he begins exacting a bloody revenge against those who disturbed his final resting place.

Slyly combining 80's slasher tropes with an insightful and self reflective look at the meaning of horror movies and death itself, Norman Thaddeus Vane’s "FRIGHTMARE" (originally known as "THE HORROR STAR") is a quick witted and suspenseful tribute to classic horror cinema. With captivating cinematography by Joel King (JUST BEFORE DAWN) and supporting performances from Jeffrey Combs ("RE-ANIMATOR"), Luca Bercovici and Leon Askin, "FRIGHTMARE" has been newly restored from its original camera negative and is coming to Blu-ray for the very first time!

At a dig in rural Mexico, a British industrialist accidentally unleashes an ancient evil: a severed hand, possessed by a vengeful demon, that attacks, kills and takes over the hand and mind of anyone who interferes with its ruthless quest for violence. Determined to stop the bloodshed, the wife of the industrialist (Samantha Eggar) joins forces with a renegade priest (Stuart Whitman), but will they be able to conquer the evil hand before the forces of hell overtake them?

Directed by Alfredo Zacarias ("THE BEES"), "DEMONOID" is a classic slice of early 80s horror sleaze, full of outrageous and violent deaths, ludicrous plot twists and a pounding musical score. Presented here is the first official DVD and Blu-ray release of "DEMONOID" in both its original US version as well as its radically re-edited international cut, known as "MACABRA," newly restored from the original negatives!

A Plague So Pleasant - DVD Review - Wild Eye Releasing

A New Twist On The Zombie Subgenre

A Plague So Pleasant DVD cover

Released by: Wild Eye Releasing
Release Date: September 29, 2015
Production Year: 2013
Region Code: 0 NTSC
Running Time: 1:17:38
Audio: English Dolby Digital 2.0
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78 Aspect Ratio)
Subtitles: None

THE FILM [ 3.5 / 5 ]:

In the near future, zombies have become a protected, endangered species, held in captivity and legally wandering the streets free from harm by the living. But for the loved ones of those who die, sometimes coping is just too much to handle, especially when not everyone feels the dead have a right to exist, and are willing to break the law to rid the world of this new population of the dead.

"A Plague So Pleasant" focuses on Clay Marshall (David Chandler), who as he states in the film, is one of many survivors of the zombie apocalypse. Clays' friend Todd (Maxwell Moody) likes Mia (Eva Boehnke), Clay's sister. The problem is that Mia is still in love with her boyfriend Jerry, who happens to be zombie. Trouble arises for Clay and many others when he tries to remedy that situation.

The filmmakers use an interesting technique going back and forth from black and white to color. At times it does help to set the tone. For being a low budget film, the special effects look good overall. There are some instances where lack of funds show, like around the 42:25 mark when the male motorist is being clawed at, but nothing is really happening, making it look kinda silly, to me at least. Other times, the camera angles are used very effectively to mask the films shortcomings. However, there are a number of great camera shots in the film that make it feel like a big Hollywood film, which helps aid the appearance of the production.

I thought the three principle actors in the film did a fine job. Mia and Todd are unfortunately minor roles and I would have liked to see more of them because their characters were odd and interesting.

AUDIO [ 3.5 / 5 ]:

The sole audio option included on the DVD is a Dolby Digital 2.0 track. I found the audio to sound good and did not encounter any major problems. Sound levels seemed to fluctuate at times. But it was never to the point of being too distracting.

VIDEO [ 2.5 / 5 ]:

"A Plague So Pleasant" shambles its way on to DVD thanks to Wild Eye Releasing. The film is presented in 1.78:1 Anamophic Widescreen. The video quality is okay for the most part, however there are some issue like haloing, which is easy to see around the 11:55 minute mark if you look at Mia's hand and the needle she is holding. A few times I also noticed what appeared to be compression issues. The video issues I noticed were not such a detriment to have a negative impact on the actual film itself.

IN CONCLUSION:

Not your average, run of the mill zombie film, "A Plague So Pleasant" offers its viewers something different to chew on. I enjoyed the story and its quirky characters. I loved the ending of the film. The DVD features acceptable video quality. If you like your zombie, or even horror films a bit different, this might be right up your alley. Check it out.
