Production Year: 1981
Region Code: A + B

Video: 1080p (2.35:1 Aspect Ratio)
Subtitles: English

THE FILM - [ 3 / 5 ]:

*This Blu-ray is part of the 2-film Blu-ray/DVD set "Edgar Allan Poe's Black Cats: Two Adaptations By Sergio Martino & Lucio Fulci."

Edgar Allan Poe’s celebrated story The Black Cat has provided the inspiration for numerous films over the years. But few adaptations are as stylish as those offered up by the twin Italian titans of terror, Sergio Martino and Lucio Fulci.

In "The Black Cat," from that “other” Godfather of Gore, Lucio Fulci (Zombie), Scotland Yard Inspector Gorley (David Warbeck, The Beyond) find himself summoned to a sleepy English village to investigate the recent murder of a young couple. With no obvious signs of entry at the murder scene, Gorley is forced to start considering the possibility that his suspect may not be human…

Creepy and very atmospheric at times, "The Black Cat" is a fine film by Lucio Fulci. As it's also mentioned in the commentary track for the film, it's not heavy on gore which is somewhat unusual for Fulci. However there are a number of entertaining death scenes and the film has Lucio Fulci's usual style of focusing on the eyes of his subject. The film uses some eerie settings and features a great score by Pino Donaggio.

AUDIO - [ 4 / 5 ]:

"The Black Cat" comes with two audio options. There is an English DTS-HD Master Audio Mono track and an Italian DTS-HD Master Audio Mono track. English subtitles are also included. From the Main Menu you are asked which version of the film you would like to view, English or Italian. I thought both audio tracks sounded very good. The sound level was consistent and balanced throughout the film. For the English language version of the film, the voice actors were easy to hear and understand. Pino Donaggio's score sounds haunting and excellent. I did not encounter any problems with either of the audio tracks.

VIDEO - [ 4 / 5 ]:

"The Black Cat" comes to Blu-ray courtesy of a brand new 2K scan of the original negatives, thanks to Arrow Video. The film is presented in 1080p with a 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio. The Blu-ray features strong colors whether it be glowing yellow eyes, bloody wounds or a characters clothing. The contrast level looks very good as do black levels. Skin tones have a natural looking appearance. The film looks very detailed overall and it really shines in many closeups with great detail present in things such as the faces, hair and clothing of the characters. Film grain looked quite good, even in darker scenes. The movie is not debris-free as there was one scene that had a couple marks show up somewhat faintly for a few seconds. Other than that, I only noticed the occasional blemish. The HD presentation sure does make the strings on the bats more noticeable though.

SPECIAL FEATURES - [ 4.5 / 5 ]:

Audio Commentary with Chris Alexander - At the time this commentary was recorded, Chris Alexander was the editor-in-chief for Fangoria. He has since stepped down from that position. Anyhow, I enjoyed the commentary as it is basically from a fans perspective. Mr. Alexander does a good job of providing information about the film and members of its cast and crew. He does go off-subject a bit from time to time but otherwise he keeps talking, with only a few quiet moments, late in the film.

Poe into Fulci: The Spirit of Perverseness (25:37) - Film historian Stephen Thrower, author of 'Beyond Terror - The Films of Lucio Fulci' discusses Fulci's Poe-tinged classic. Mr. Thrower talks about the differences and similarities between the Poe story and Fulci's film. He also mentions some aspects of the film that were ripped off from some U.S. films, sometimes against Fulci's wishes. Also discussed are some of the shortcomings of "The Black Cat" as well as its positive aspects.

In the Paw-Prints of the Black Cat (8:28) - This extra also features Stephen Thrower who takes us on a trip to some of the filming locations.

Frightened Dagmar (20:12) - An informative interview with actress Dagmar Lassander. She discusses how she began acting and many of the films from her career. Ms. Lassander talks about how she once broke a contract due to not desiring to do the type of film a studio wanted and having to go to court. (with English subtitles)

At Home with David Warbeck (1:10:20) - A lengthy, vintage interview by Stephen Thrower that takes place at David Warbeck's London home. The interview covers a number of topics including what it was like to work with Lucio Fulci, acting skills he used in his roles and filming "The Black Cat." Mr. Warbeck shares several personal stories involving his career, experience in the film business and personal life including a very tragic story involving a plane crash.

Theatrical Trailer (3:01)

Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly-commissioned artwork by Matthew Griffin.

IN CONCLUSION:

As mentioned earlier, this Blu-ray is part of the 2-film (4-disc) Blu-ray/DVD set "Edgar Allan Poe's Black Cats: Two Adaptations By Sergio Martino & Lucio Fulci." The other film in the set is Sergio Martino's "Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key" which we reviewed here. That set also includes an 80 page perfect-bound book featuring new writing on the films, Poe's original story and more, illustrated with archive stills and posters.

"The Black Cat" features excellent audio and video quality that should please its fans. The Blu-ray also comes loaded with two hours of extras. A bit of a different film from Fulci's typical gore-fests, it's still an entertaining film. I haven't seen the other Blu-ray yet in this set, but am very much looking forward to it as I am a fan of the film.

Dr. Gangrene puts safety first this Halloween season in 'Happy Halloween with Dr. Gangrene'

Check out this Halloween public safety film

Happy Halloween with Dr. Gangrene poster

Shackle Island Studios and Red Headed Revolution Pictures have unveiled their newest Public Safety Film titled ‘Happy Halloween With Dr. Gangrene.’ The new short film features Larry Underwood as Dr. Gangrene listing a number of safety tips to pint sized trick-or-treaters. The safety film was written by Larry Underwood and directed by Cameron McCasland. It was filmed in Middle Tennessee and features McCasland's young children Roxie & Marie McCasland as well as Jessica and Joseph Auguon Drake Jr. whom McCasland had previously worked with on other projects. The poster for the short was designed by J. Kyle Kelly at Villain Place in Nashville, TN. Kelly also shared shooting duties and editing on the project. The cartoon image of Dr. Gangrene is courtesy of artist Jeff Carlson.

Underwood said of the project “Halloween is a magical time of year, and we want kids to have fun and be safe out there. You know what they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, or candy, as the case may be.”

2015 has been a banner year for the horror film making duo. Underwood's Dr. Gangrene was inducted into the Horror Host Hall of Fame during Horrorhound Weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio. His new series 'The Fantastic Films of Vincent Price' just completed its 44th episode, and he picked up his third Rondo Statuette this time for his 'Tales From The Lab' blog. McCasland was named Indie Director Of The Year at the 2015 Indieville TV Awards. His feature length slasher film 'The Lashman' was the recipient of a Matchflick Flicker Award for Best Throwback film. His newly released short film Tailypo recently picked up honors at the Imaginarium Film Festival. And he has also picked up hardware for his video producing work on several music industry related projects including a Communicator award for his documentary ‘I Heard The Devil Say My Name Out Loud’.

This new public safety film follows in a long line of shorts from collaborators McCasland & Underwood. Their ‘Go Green With Dr. Gangrene’ series ran for several years and received praise from the governor of Tennessee and the Nashville City Council. It also garnered national attention, picking up awards from the AEGIS awards, Ava Awards, MarCom Awards, Blingy Awards, The Accolade Competition, The DV Awards, a Public Service award from the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards, and four Emmy nominations from the Midsouth Chapter of the National Television Academy of Arts & Sciences.

'Happy Halloween With Dr. Gangrene' will air on The CW network as well as the NECAT network locally in Nashville, which currently airs re-reruns of the television program Dr. Gangrene Presents. It will also be screening at a number of Halloween themed events in October hosted by Dr. Gangrene, These include the rock n' roll extravaganza 'Dr. Gangrene's Horror Hootenanny.' A long standing tradition in Nashville now in its twelfth year. You can also catch it on the big screen, and under the stars, at the Franklin Drive-In in Franklin, KY for a terrifying triple feature of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," "The Goonies," and McCasland’s "Tailypo" (read our review). "Tailypo" will also be screening this October at Chattanooga's Frightening Ass Film Fest and in Nashville at the Yazoo brewery with ‘Cabin In The Woods’ for Monster Sundays presented by Something About Zombies.
Franklin Drive-In Halloween Horror Triple-feature

In addition to this new short film, Underwood & McCasland are helping fans celebrate Halloween by making their 2010 Emmy nominated made for television movie 'The Dreadful Hallowgreen Special' available to stream for free during the month of October on the Dr. Gangrene YouTube channel. The half hour comedy also features New England's Penny Dreadful and the legendary Count Gore DeVol. Fans of the show will also find a number of other classic episodes and special content available for the Halloween season.

Tailypo - Short Film Review - Red Headed Revolution

Red Headed Revolution unleashes a tale of a tail in creepy Tailypo short.

Tailypo poster

Before I give my review, here is some background information on the short film.

The Appalachian cryptozoology folk tale of “The Tailypo” has been brought to life, in a terrifying live action film from director Cameron McCasland.

McCasland had been carrying the Tailypo story around for years stating, “The first time I heard this legend I was in elementary school, and my teacher told it to us around Halloween. It always stuck with me, and creeped me out. I wanted to tell it again, in a way that was frightening, but still accessible in the same way it was to me as a kid.”

Tailypo re-teams McCasland with actor David Chattam who had previously appeared as Carl Degas in his 2014 released slasher film, "The Lashman" (reviewed here). McCasland said of working with Chattam, “Dave wasn’t what I had in mind originally when I was casting The Lashman, but his audition blew me away. He was on set for a day and was just a joy to work with. I started writing Tailypo with him in mind, but I never told him until the script was ready. I honestly don’t know if I would have made this movie if he had turned me down. I told him i have a whole short where you basically are monologuing to a dog the entire time. Luckily for me, he jumped at the chance.”

The Tailypo is voiced by Danielle Geleherter more commonly known as TV horror host Penny Dreadful in the new England area. McCasland had previously worked with her on the Emmy nominated 2010 made for television movie The Dreadful Hallowgreen Special. The short film also gave him the opportunity to re-team with Lashman director of photography Josh Ickes and composer Thomas Berdinski who performed a hauntingly original score for the film.

The movie was shot on location at the Copper Canyon Guntown Ranch in Hopkinsville, KY. McCasland had previously used the venue for The Lashman, A music video for country act Florida Georgia Line, and two feature films he co-produced with director Lee Vervoort, The Truck, and Guntown.

The Tailypo is the first in a series of shorts McCasland plans to collect for an anthology series hosted by his longtime collaborator Larry Underwood as seminal horror host Dr. Gangrene.

The Tailypo is currently free to view online at redheadedrevolution.com and will be screening at film festivals around the globe this year.

REVIEW:

I really enjoyed "Tailypo." I purposely didn't read the plot for the film so I had no idea what to expect. If you've read above then you have an idea about the story. Let me say that by the end, I felt like I was back in the 80's watching something that could have been an episode of "Tales From the Darkside" or "Monsters." I loved the look and voice (Danielle Gelehrter) of the creature. I thought David Chattam did a good job in his role, as the only actual person in the film.

Definitely give this short film a look. If you're familiar with either of the TV shows I mentioned, see if it doesn't make you feel like your back in the 80's. A nice job by Cameron McCasland and I look forward to his future film projects.

Horror-Comedy 'Bloody Knuckles' coming to Blu-raym DVD and VOD on October 27th

Wanna Play 'Bloody Knuckles' ?

Bloody Knuckles cover

A cult film in the making, Matt O’Mahoney's cheesily sick "Bloody Knuckles" has been a film festival favorite and has been described as “Vulgar, violent and very funny” by quietearth.us, “Puerile, juvenile, grotesque fun” by allthingshorror.com, “A bloody, funny blast!” by Bloody-Disgusting.com and “A five finger exercise in fun frights” by Fangoria.

The film follows a determinedly offensive cartoonist who gets his hand chopped off by a humorless crime lord. But the severed hand comes back to life (think of it as a demented Resurrection parable) to seek revenge on evil-doers. With plenty of dark humor and eye-popping violence, Bloody Knuckles makes for a totally un-PC, bloody good time.

Artsploitation Films is releasing Bloody Knuckles on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD on October 27th.

Synopsis:
Travis, an underground comic book artist with a penchant for obscene caricatures, upsets a Chinatown crime lord who responds by cutting off the young man’s hand. As a despondent, drunken Travis wallows in post-severed hand depression, his decomposing limb returns to life and is determined to exact revenge. Soon, Travis and his mischievous appendage join forces with a masked S&M superhero to rid the city of evil. Filmmaker Matt O.’s debut feature strips Canada of its “land of nice” image with this deliriously offensive, gory, and happily un-PC horror-comedy!

Blu-ray / DVD Special Features:
  • Bonus features: Director's Commentary
  • Featurettes

Face Your Fears in 'Nightmares' - an Upcoming Horror Series

A New Interactive Horror Series “Nightmares” is being unleashed

Nightmares

Burbank, CA – A new interactive horror series is coming soon. “Nightmares” - An in-depth nightmare re-enactment series has launched on Kickstarter. Nightmares are one of the very few experiences that connects every living person on the planet. The series dives deep into the minds of people that have suffered from terrible nightmares and then, in a brand new format, various medical and mental health professionals attempt to explain the cause of these terrible experiences, segment by segment. If the medical professionals are stumped, paranormal investigators step in.

Nightmares is hosted by Kevin Grevioux (Underworld, I Frankenstein) while Lance Henriksen (Aliens, Pumkinhead, Terminator, etc.) introduces each episode. With a number of high profile horror talent attached, each segment will feature a notable contributor to the horror industry, appearing in re-enactments, hosting, and offering unique and masterful insight. Only way to find out who hosts what… is to watch…

The nightmares are re-enacted in true short horror film fashion, focusing on the creature or
monster. Each episode is a full Nightmare that plays out similar to Tales from the Crypt or Tales from the Darkside with emphasis on bringing the audience new, original monsters. The show wraps up with over two dozen medical professionals and masters of their field, including but not limited to: Psychologists, Paranormal Researchers and Analysts, Psychics, sleep and dream research centers and their team of leading dream experts in North America, Reiki Masters and energy workers, Theologists, Historians, and Neurologists, Fear Enthusiasts, Therapists, and Biologists to chime in and develop theories to the explanations of the nightmare in an attempt to help the dreamer, or in our case… “The Victim”

But it gets better. When living in the world of Nightmares, medical experts may not be able to pinpoint the obvious source of the nightmare. If this happens, Nightmares has partnered with Hollywood Ghost Hunters, led by Kane Hodder (Jason VoorheesI, in Friday the 13th part VII, VIII, Jason Goes To Hell, etc), who will conduct a paranormal investigation in the area where the nightmare occurred, searching for answers.

Nightmares cast and crew

Our first Nightmare comes from a man that started having nightmares after working for Clive
Barker’s Seraphim Films. Kane Hodder and his team performed a paranormal investigation... in Clive Barker’s house. A true life, character crosses over with a thick vat of paranormal dumped on it; Jason visits the happenings at the Hellraiser house. A hair-raising episode with some of the greatest horror icons immersed in the passion of the genre.

Speaking of Clive Barker, his art work serves as a backdrop for the series in season one.
Nightmares has partnered with Century Guild and each episode will feature different pieces of artwork from the mind of a master of horror himself. The artistic back drop is expected to
change from season to season.

The show’s creator and Executive Producer Jin Kelley said “In all the horror films I’ve seen and admired, it always came down to the monster, whatever it may be. If the monster wasn’t
believable, then it pulls the viewer out of the story you’ve spent so much time building. You have to respect the fans and give them the best you possibly can. I believe the best way to keep that necessary fear factor intact is with creative practical effects.”

Attached to the show are a number of artists featured on highly popular SyFy show Face Off. Fan favorites and champions Rayce Bird, Logan Long, Cig Neutron, Drew Talbot, Keaghlan Ashley, Rashaad Santiago, Cat Paschen, Niko Gonzalez, George Schminky, Julian Bonfiglio, Wayne Anderson, Gage Munster, Jaime Leodones, Stevie Calabrese, George Troester, and J Anthony Kosar just to name a few. These SFX all-stars compile some of the incredibly talented artists that have come together to make monsters for Nightmares. This Dream Team of artists will rotate so the audience gets to see all of these champions build the monsters in an accompanying webseries available on the Nightmares website. Nightmares picked up Director of Photography David M. Brewer, who chilled audiences of Insidious and countless other horror films.

The show Nightmares is very interactive, appealing to a global audience. Viewers can submit their own personal nightmare and the show may elect to bring that nightmare to life, prompting our tag line:

“It’s Time To Face Your Demons…”

Each episode will produce new, original monsters. The audience are able to choose which one they want to see in a feature film... as well as which actors... even locations. The Nightmares Team have listened to their fellow the horror fans and are prepared to influence the shape and direction of interactive horror in the entertainment, and its audience forever.

“Nightmares connect every person on the planet. It’s not bound by languages, or ethnicity, or anything else. I also wanted to create something that the fans could actually get involved with on the development level. They can interact with the film making process. I got pretty tired of getting excited over a project that I grew up watching, only to see that the people that finally made it into a movie dropped the ball and disappointed millions of fans in the process. I say give the fans what they want. In order to do that you need a platform for them to easily communicate with you” – creator Jin Kelley

While the series itself has yet to look for a network to call home, they have already begun shooting various segments to drum up some buzz. So far Lisa Wilcox (Nightmare on Elm Street 4 & 5, Star Trek: The Next Generation), Chloe Dykstra (Heroes of Cosplay), Doug Jones (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Crimson Peak), Philip Friedman (Insidious), Nicholas King (Sinister), Douglas Tait (Freddy vs Jason, Teen Wolf) have been seen on the Nightmares set as well as a few endorsements from other soon to be announced horror icons.

A show like this has never been done before. It’s a show that is powered by fans, hosted by
icons, explained by science, with monsters made by champions, all while keeping the fans
actively engaged. And in true independent fashion, they have launched a Kickstarter campaign to finance the pilot episode of the series which can be viewed here.

The film was directed by Geoffrey Wright (Romper Stomper) and stars Brittany Murphy ("Clueless," "8 Mile"), Jay Mohr ("Pay it Forward," "Street Kings") , Michael Biehn ("The Terminator," "Aliens"), Jesse Bradford ("Bring it On," "Swimfan") and Gabriel Mann (Revenge).

As excited as we are to be able to bring this to you (finally) we do need to address upfront the question we know some of you will have: Will it be uncut?

We were fully aware that the film suffered trims from the MPAA prior to its release so when we acquired the film we hoped that we could find the additional footage and include it—either as deleted scenes or reinstated into the film. Unfortunately, our licensor (Universal) only has the theatrical R-rated version in their vault (the same cut that was released on the long out-of-print DVD) and they do not have cut footage in question.

Plan B: We contacted the film’s Director Geoffrey Wright to see if maybe he might have the excised material but were told that he was never given a chance to assemble a longer cut originally. He did not have the footage either.

That being said, we still hope that fans will support the release in High-def. Extras are planned and will be announced at a later date. New key art is also in the works too.

Get Ready to Earn That Merit Badge... Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse - Film News

In theaters this Halloween

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse poster

Some people might roll their eyes and say something like, oh great, another zombie movie. But... well, yes, another zombie movie. However, this one looks like it's trying to be a bit different. So far it looks to be a pretty fun movie. Hopefully it does well because we need more horror films in theaters, in wide release and Rated R preferably, please and thank you.

Synopsis:

Three scouts and lifelong friends join forces with one badass cocktail waitress to become the world's most unlikely team of heroes. When their peaceful town is ravaged by a zombie invasion, they'll fight for the badge of a lifetime and put their scouting skills to the test to save mankind from the undead.

The horror-comedy was directed by Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones). The film stars Tye Sheridan (X-Men: Apocalypse), Logan Miller (Would You Rather), Joey Morgan, Sarah Dumont (Don Jon), David Koechner (Anchorman), Halston Sage (Goosebumps) and Niki Koss (The Appearing).

"Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse" is scheduled for release on October 30, 2015.

You can also visit the films official website, Facebook and Twitter for more information.

Fear the Walking Dead - Season One, Blu-ray News

Hot on the heels of the season finale comes news of the upcoming Blu-ray release of Season One

Fear the Walking Dead the Complete First Season

Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced plans to bring the AMC TV show, "Fear the Walking Dead" to DVD and Blu-ray on December 1, 2015.
Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season is set to include the following special features:

  • A Look at the Series
  • Character Bios

"Fear the Walking Dead" was created by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) and Dave Erickson (Sons of Anarchy). The show stars Kim Dickens, RubĂ©n Blades, Cliff Curtis, Mercedes Mason, Lorenzo James Henrie, Frank Dillane, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Colman Domingo.

"Fear the Walking Dead" is more of a prequel to "The Walking Dead" in that it takes place before the epidemic begins and we get to see all hell break loose.

Living in the same universe as The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead is a gritty drama that explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. Set in a city where people come to escape, shield secrets, and bury their pasts, a mysterious outbreak threatens to disrupt what little stability high school guidance counselor Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) and English teacher Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis) have managed to assemble. The everyday pressure of blending two families while dealing with resentful, escapist, and strung out children takes a back seat when society begins to break down. A forced evolution, a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold, and our dysfunctional family must either reinvent themselves or embrace their darker histories.
