Scream Factory to add "Raising Cain"to its list of Blu-ray releases. Also updates on "SSSSSSS" and "Village of the Damned." 

Scream Factory announced today their plans to bring "Raising Cain" to Blu-ray in June. Here's what they had to say:

We're thrilled to announce that Brian DePalma's underrated thriller RAISING CAIN (starring the ever so talented John Lithgow) will be getting the "Collector's Edition" Blu-ray treatment! Street date is June 28th.

Scream Factory announced their list of special features for their upcoming Blu-ray release of William Friedkin's "The Guardian." The Blu-ray is scheduled to be released on January 16, 2016. 

Synopsis:
Optimistic about their future, well-off parents Kate (Carey Lowell) and Phil (Dwier Brown) hire the pleasant and lovely young Camilla (Jenny Seagrove) to live with them and care for their new baby. Though Camilla seems like an answer to their prayers, she proves to be more than she appears, and a diabolical plot involving the well being of their child is uncovered. The young parents are forced to fight supernatural forces for the life of their vulnerable offspring.

'Disturbing Behavior' Coming to Blu-ray from Scream Factory

Scream Factory Bringing the Katie Holmes horror film "Disturbing Behavior" to Blu-ray in 2016

Even more good news for horror fans as Scream Factory has announced they will be bringing the 1998 teen horror David Nutter directed film "Disturbing Behavior" to Blu-ray. 

Here's what Scream Factory said about their upcoming release:

"The Stepford Wives-esque DISTURBING BEHAVIOR will be making its way to the blu-ray format for the first time on March 22! This 1998 chiller stars Katie Holmes (Dawson’s Creek, Batman Begins), James Marsden (X-men, Westworld) and Nick Stahl (Terminator 3)."
As far as extras are concerned Scream Factory has mentioned, "Our cut of the film will be the same as it was presented on the prior DVD released by MGM. All the extras from that release (which included deleted footage and alternate ending) will be ported over. The only extra we couldn't get (for legal and music right issues) is a music video by a group called The Flys."

THE FILM - [ 3 / 5 ]:

During the 1960s Luciano Lutring committed more than one hundred armed robberies in Italy and on the French Riviera. To the media he was the ‘machine gun soloist’, a name he’d earned as he kept his weapon in a violin case. To the public he was a romantic figure, one who only targeted the wealthy, stealing more than 35 billion lire during his criminal career.

Wake Up and Kill was the logical extension of such fame. It became the first feature to commit Lutring’s story to celluloid, shooting having begun mere months after his eventual arrest. Capitalizing on the breakthrough success of his performance in French television’s "The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe," Robert Hoffmann is perfect as Lutring, bringing just the right amount of charisma and youthful exuberance to his first major big screen role.

Directed by Carlo Lizzani ("Requiescant" which we also reviewed), scored by the legend Ennio Morricone, penned by the future screenwriter of "Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion," and featuring that film’s star, Gian Maria Volonté, in a key supporting role, Wake Up and Kill’s true-crime thrills serve as an enthralling dry run for the poliziotteschi movies that would follow a few years later.

The longer original Italian language version of "Wake Up and Kill" has a running time of 2:03:51 while the shorter English language cut runs 1:37:38. I thought that the longer version tends to get a little boring at times, so the English cut does feel like a tighter film and of course moves at a brisker pace with the reduced run time. I tend to prefer more footage in films mostly because of that need to see more, however in this case as sometimes with others, I feel that less is more. So while some parts of the story may be truncated, the quicker pace is more appealing to me. 

Ennio Morricone's score is as usual, a joy to listen to and helps provide added tension and drama in the right places, specially at the end of the film when things come to a head and Lutring is literally running for his life. Robert Hoffman is terrific in his portrayal of Luciano Lutring. At times he is very charismatic and likable and at others he is downright despicable and loathsome. Lisa Gastoni plays Yvonne, also known as Angela, as a woman who has very bad taste in men as she goes from being the girlfriend of a known criminal to thinking she found her knight in shining armor in Lutring, only to find out he is far from the wholesome hero she thought he was.  

AUDIO - [ 3 / 5 ]:

"Wake Up And Kill" features two LPCM audio tracks with each track appearing on their respective versions of the film. The audio has the typical odd sound to it due to the method of recording audio often used during the time period. While the audio may not wow you, it is above average and also sounds fairly clean. I cannot speak for the Italian version since I do not speak it but the English version was easy to hear and understand. I did think that sometimes the sound effects were a little louder than they should be but it was not a real problem. I did not encounter any issues with the audio in the form of drop outs, hissing or other problems. Both versions of the film have English subtitles available.

VIDEO - [ 4 / 5 ]:

"Wake Up And Kill" comes to Blu-ray thanks to Arrow Video via a brand new 2K restoration from the films original camera negative. The film is presented in 1080p with a 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. First off, the picture quality overall is very good. There are some areas that may draw complaints such as the drab colors during most of the film and the amount of film grain present. In both cases I think both are there for legitimate reasons. Color appearing in this type of film from this era were often subdued and not bright and bold. As for the film grain, that is inherent in the film stock that was used and speaking for myself, I would rather have excess grain than have an attempt to clean it up using some type of DNR. You may be able to see some of what I am talking about in the included screenshots. 

Otherwise the film does feature a fair amount of detail throughout and a significant amount of fine detail in close ups. In darker scenes black levels are a bit muddled at times and are not particularly strong. They do fare better in brighter scenes. There are many instances of white specks appearing throughout the film.  

SPECIAL FEATURES - [ 2 / 5 ]:

Unlike typical Arrow Video releases that are chock-full of extras, this release is notably light in that department. However there are two cuts of the film included as previously mentioned. 

This release also features reversible cover art including the original art and newly commissioned artwork by Reinhard Kleist. 

Illustrated collector’s booklet containing new writing on the film by Robert Curti, author of Italian Crime Filmography, 1968-1980

IN CONCLUSION:

Another nice release by Arrow Video. The film looks very good thanks to their new 2K scan from the original camera negative. While light on extras, this Blu-ray features the original Italian version as well as the English cut of the film. If you enjoy poliziotteschi type films, I think you will like this one too. This Blu-ray and DVD Combo Pack is available in the US and UK.

John Carpenter's 'Village of the Damned' Coming to Blu-ray from Scream Factory

More HD John Carpenter in 2016!

Scream Factory has announced plans to release John Carpenter's 1995 remake of "Village of the Damned" on to Blu-ray in 2016. The film starred the late Christopher Reeve, Kirstie Alley, Linda Kozlowski, Mark Hamill and Meredith Salenger.

Regarding their release, Scream Factory had this to say:

"We’re pleased to start off December on a high note with the announcement of a future release that’s been requested several times over the years: John’s Carpenter’s 1995 remake of VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED!

This underrated shocker will be making its long overdue appearance on blu-ray late next Spring / early Summer. And, yes, it is planned as a Collector’s Edition (Extras are already in progress.)"

Two More Titles Coming to Blu-ray from Scream Factory

A new no-holds-barred, martial-arts-meets-walking-dead hybrid has just been added to our schedule: ZOMBIE FIGHT CLUB will punch its way onto Digital platforms, On Demand, DVD and Blu-ray with a release date planned for Feb 2nd!

Scream Factory Announces The Curse/Curse 2 and Millennium/ROTOR Double Feature Blu-rays

Two Double-Feature Blu-rays Coming from Scream Factory

Scream Factory announced today that they plan to release two more double feature Blu-rays February 23, 2016. The titles are "The Curse" / "Curse II: The Bite" and "Millennium" / "R.O.T.O.R."

THE CURSE & THE CURSE II

THE CURSE (1987) Young Zach Hayes' (Wil Wheaton, Stand by Me) life on the family dairy farm is what anyone would expect. Hard work, long hours and the normal family squabbles. When an ice-blue meteor plunges through the midnight sky, Zach sees in hand on their property. Zach and the local doctor discover that something inside the meteor is infecting the local water on their farm. Fruits, which looked perfect on the outside are teeming with worms… and Zach's family is beginning to change…hideously. Manhunter and Lady in White Coming to Blu-ray from Scream Factory

Scream Factory is Cranking Out Two More Titles on to Blu-ray

Scream Factory has even more news as they have announced two more thriller / horror titles today that they plan to release on Blu-ray in 2016.

In regard to "Lady in White" Scream Factory said "Our pre-Halloween celebration continues with the reveal that we will be releasing Director Frank LaLoggia’s "Lady in White" (1988) to Blu-ray for the first time sometime this Spring! 

More specifics (street date, extras, etc.) on this underrated gem will be revealed during the early part of the new year."

Synopsis:
An author tells the story of how, as a young boy growing up in a small town during the 1960's, he was haunted after witnessing the murder of a little girl.

As for "Manhunter," Scream Factory had this to say, "Next Summer we go into “Hannibal” territory as we plan to release an ultimate Collector’s Edition of Michael Mann’s 1986 thriller "Manhunter"!

Species II, Murders in the Rue Morgue and The Dunwich Horror coming to Blu-ray from Scream Factory in 2016

Three More Titles Announced for 2016

Scream Factory announced three new titles today that they will be bringing to Blu-ray in 2016. First up is the 1998 sci-fi horror sequel, "Species II" starring Natasha Henstridge, Michael Madsen, Marg Helgenberger, and Mykelti Williamson. Scream Factory will also be releasing a double feature of "Species III" and "Species IV: The Awakening" on the same date. No news yet regarding extras, artwork and specific release dates. They will be announced at a later date.

Synopsis:
An astronaut gets infected with alien DNA during the first mission on Mars and runs amok on earth. Preston and Laura team up with a peaceful, genetically re-engineered Sil to track the monster down.

Scream Factory also announced plans to release a double-feature Blu-ray of 1971's "Murders in the Rue Morgue" and 1970's "The Dunwich Horror." Possible special features and release date for the films will be announced at a later time.

"Murders in the Rue Morgue" stars Jason Robards, Herbert Lom, Christine Kaufmann and Adolfo Celi.

Synopsis:
Paris...at the turn of the century. Inspector Vidocq investigates a series of unexplained murders at a Grand Guignol-type theater where the players have suddenly become real-life victims.

Takashi Miike's New Supernatural Thriller is Coming to Blu-ray

Scream Factory will be bringing Takashi Miike's new supernatural horror thriller "Over Your Dead Body" to Blu-ray and DVD on January 5, 2016. Synopsis:
Dr. Bill Cortner (Jason Evers) is a successful surgeon who has just saved a patient pronounced dead in the emergency room—a patient of his father (Bruce Brighton)—with an unorthodox surgical method. After the younger Cortner and his beautiful fiancée Jan Compton (Virginia Leith) are involved in a fiery car accident that decapitates Jan, Cortner collects her severed head and rushes it to his home basement laboratory, where he revives it and manages to keep it alive in a liquid-filled tray.

Cortner now decides to commit murder to obtain an attractive new body to attach to his fiancée's head. 'Vincent Price Collection 3' Coming to Blu-ray from Scream Factory

A 3rd Round of Vincent Price Titles Are Coming

Scream Factory announced earlier today that they plan to bring "The Vincent Price Collection Volume III" to Blu-ray sometime in the first half of 2016. 

The films in this set will include "Master of the World" (1961), "Tower of London" (1962), "Diary of a Madman" (1963), "Cry of the Banshee" (1970) and "An Evening of Edgar Allan Poe" (1970).

Stay tuned for more details (when to pre-order, artwork, etc.) before the end of the year. 'Contracted Phase 2' Coming from Scream Factory in a Blu-ray and DVD Combo Pack

The sequel to "Contracted" is coming to home video

Scream Factory has announced that they will be releasing IFC Midnight's "Contracted Phase 2" in a Blu-ray and DVD Combo Pack on January 12, 2015. The Film was directed by Josh Forbes.

Synopsis:

Picking up immediately after the events of the first film, this riveting sequel follows Riley (Matt Mercer, Contracted), now infected and running out of time, as he attempts to find out more about the virus and its mysterious host. As he digs deeper into its origins, Riley attracts the attention of a detective (Marianna Palka, Good Dick) who doubts his innocence, and BJ (Morgan Peter Brown, Absentia), who holds the key to the virus – and perhaps the destruction of mankind as we know it – leading to a blood-soaked finale you have to see to believe. The House Where Evil Dwells and Ghost Warrior - Double Feature Coming to Blu-ray from Scream Factory

A New Double-Feature Coming to Blu-ray in 2016

Scream Factory announced today a double feature of Kevin Connor's 1982 film, "The House Where Evil Dwells" and J. Larry Carroll's 1984 film, "Ghost Warrior." According to the Scream Factory listing, "The House Where Evil Dwells" is from a new transfer.

There is no word yet on possible special features.


THE HOUSE WHERE EVIL DWELLS (1982) 

A century ago, a samurai brutally murdered his adulterous wife and her lover before taking his own life. Now, the Fletcher family has found what they think is their perfect Japanese home – not knowing it's the same house where the murders occurred. But as strange events escalate and the ghosts of the dead begin to toy with the living, the Fletchers discover they've become unwitting players in a horrible reenactment... one which they may not survive!
