Sgt. Kabukiman Blu-ray cover

Released by: Troma Entertainment
Release Date: November 10, 2015
Production Year: 1990
Region Code: A
Running Time: 1:45:04
Audio: English Dolby Digital 2.0
Video: 1080p (1.78:1 Aspect Ratio)
Subtitles: None

THE FILM - [ 3 / 5 ]:

Meet NYPD Sgt. Harry Griswold (Rick Gianasi), a streetwise cop who becomes possessed with the spirit of a great Kabuki master, transforming him into the worlds most unusual super-human hero. Using a new arsenal including fatal sushi heat-seeking chopsticks and pyro projectile parasols, Sgt. Kabukiman must save the day!

In a surprise turn of events, New York police officer becomes the recipient of the power to become a super hero. Harry Griswold is not very accepting of his new appearance at first and when he is unable to transform into Sgt. Kabukiman but becomes something less desirable and beneficial, he seeks the help of the beautiful Lotus (Susan Byun). Through hard work and perseverance or as Lotus calls it, fear and pain, Harry is able to harness the power and become Sgt. Kabukiman. The two grow close which as you may expect, is used against Mr. Griswold later on in the film.

In typical Troma fashion the acting is a bit over the top and hammy at times but it fits quite well considering the subject matter of the film. The film also features some cheap effects but also some good looking practical effects. The film was aided by a partnership with Namco who came on the help produce the film. Lloyd Kaufman talks more in depth about that in the commentary that is included. There are a number of nice shots of features of New York in the film including the Statue of Liberty appearing in the background during a transformation scene and also a nice aerial view (Troma purchased) of the Empire State Building.

"Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D." features a number of funny gag scenes, some of which involve Sgt. Kabukiman's assortment of specialty weapons like chopsticks, fans or even turning criminals in to a giant sushi roll. The film also includes a few nude scenes which is sure to please some viewers. While a little light on gore effects there are quite a few comically, violent scenes.

AUDIO - [ 2 / 5 ]:

The sole audio option on the Blu-ray is an English Dolby Digital 2.0 track. Generally speaking, the audio is serviceable. However there is a bit of a hiss present depending on the dialogue and words that end in an "s" sound. A fair amount of the scenes involving Lotus speaking, include some hissing. Otherwise the audio isn't too bad, with the dialogue, sound effects and score easy to hear and/or understand. The sound levels were consistent and well balanced. I did not notice any other audio issues other than the hissing.

VIDEO - [ 3 / 5 ]:

"Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D." sushi rolls its way on to Blu-ray courtesy of Troma Entertainment. The film is presented in 1080p with a 1.78 Aspect Ratio. I was pleasantly surprised by the video quality of this Blu-ray. At times the quality does fluctuate and the image looks a bit on the soft side here and there but I suspect the majority of that has to do with how the film was shot. For the most part the picture has a fair amount of sharpness and detail present. During the first fifteen minutes or so of the film you will notice an unruly hair at the bottom of the screen that pops up on occasion. There are some white specks that also appear sporadically throughout but they are few and caused no distraction. Colors look strong on this release with primaries looking very nice. Skin tones appear natural in color as well. Black levels looked fairly look also. Grain levels are fine and I never really found them to be overly heavy even in darker scenes.

SPECIAL FEATURES - [ 3 / 5 ]:

Lloyd Kaufman Intro (6:27) - When the Blu-ray is inserted, an introduction by Lloyd Kaufman plays automatically. Lloyd introduces the film and its Blu-ray premiere. A short segment called "Behind the Chopsticks", a take on the "Behind the Music" show from VH1, plays and features Sgt. Kabukiman talking about his career highs and lows.

Audio Commentary - Mr. Troma himself Lloyd Kaufman appears on this commentary track. Mr. Kaufman provides a wealth of information from tidbits on members of the cast and crew to personal stories from the set including a scary story involving the lion and Toyota the monkey. As silly as Lloyd is in his comedy skits that appear on the various Troma projects, he provides a great, honest commentary for this release. Fans of Sgt. Kabukiman and/or Troma should definitely listen to this track.

Interview with Rick Gianasi (6:45) - This interview takes places at the Megacon convention in Orlando Florida. Lloyd Kaufman interviews Rick Gianasi and asks questions from the fans about his role in the film and what he is doing now.

Kabukiman's Karaoke (2:35) - A room of fans singing the Sgt. Kabukiman theme song.

Kabukiman's Cocktail Corner (12:08) - Sgt. Kabukiman is joined by Brian Quinn of TV's Impractical Jokers and Lloyd Kaufman. They all perform a brief scene from a film that Brian Quinn had once pitched to Troma.

Stupid Moments in Troma History (2:50) - A look back at the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and a tape that shows Sgt. Kabukiman at the scene as it purports to implicate him in the crime with a single chopstick theory.

Sgt. Kabukiman Original Trailer (3:35)

Tromadance 2015 Highlights (5:20) - Includes brief clips of interviews with attendees and film makers.

Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D. still

IN CONCLUSION:

A nice package by Troma Entertainment. It is a shame that the audio was not cleaned up a bit as it would have really improved the audio of this release. Otherwise the Blu-ray looks nice and features several extras including a really great commentary track with Lloyd Kaufman. If cheesy fun films are your thing then you are in luck as I would recommend giving this one a chance. If you prefer your super hero films more straight laced or dark and brooding, you may want to look elsewhere.

Symphony in Blood Red (2010) - DVD Review - Troma Entertainment

A nice attempt at recapturing the magic of classic giallo films that falls a little short

Symphony in Blood Red DVD cover

Released by: Troma Entertainment
Release Date: November 10, 2015
Production Year: 2010
Region Code: ALL
Running Time: 1:18:38
Audio: Italian Dolby Digital 2.0
Video: NTSC Anamorphic Widescreen
Subtitles: English

THE FILM - [ 2.5 / 5 ]:

During a session, a psychologist unleashes her mysterious patient’s latent madness… Now he’s carrying on the therapy by himself! “Symphony in Blood Red” is a new twist on the ‘giallo’ formula in the tradition of Argento’s “Tenebre”.

The film is somewhat hard to describe partially due to in my opinion, that the story was not very riveting. "Symphony in Blood Red" is somewhat of a revenge film yet our killer does not exactly only seek revenge on those that wronged him. He seemingly kills at random if he thinks the unfortunately person deserves it. Sometimes the audience feels compassion for and may be inclined to cheer on the aggressor. This is not one of those times. Director Luigi Pastore made a good attempt with his film but for me it just seemed to be missing something. The revenge factor reminds me a little of Ms. 45 where the lead in that film also kills those that did not wrong her which made it difficult for me to feel sorry for her. By the end of the film I was not rooting for her at all actually which was kind of sad since I initially wanted to see her triumph but then she crossed that line and herself became a villain, much like our killer in "Symphony in Blood Red."

Gore hounds should be somewhat pleased with some of the death scenes that appear in the film. Make-up and special effects artist Sergio Stivaletti does a great job and it is a shame some scenes were not a little brighter so we could have seen more of his bloody handiwork.

Symphony in Blood Red still

AUDIO - [ 3 / 5 ]:

"Symphony in Blood Red" comes with an Italian Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track. The dialogue sounded fairly clear but since I do not speak Italian, I cannot totally vouch for that. A big minus for the audio quality was that often the volume level of the sound effects or music was substantially louder than the dialogue level. Thankfully for most that will not be a factor since the music doesn't exactly overlap the dialogue. The music in the film does sound fantastic though. Can you really ever go wrong with Claudio Simonetti?

Symphony in Blood Red still

VIDEO - [ 2 / 5 ]:

"Symphony in Blood Red" arrives on DVD via Troma Entertainment. The film is presented in NTSC anamorphic widescreen. The video quality is average with this release. There are periods of pixelation and jittering. Overall though the colors look good and the make-up effects look great. There are moments where we are treated to some detailed images. While the quality is a bit lacking, it certainly should not be enough to deter someone from still enjoying the film.

SPECIAL FEATURES - [ 3 / 5 ]:

Intro (4:12) - When the DVD is first inserted, Lloyd Kaufman appears as Dario Argento impersonator and speaks about the film. In typical comedic Lloyd fashion he also introduces, according to Lloyd, famed conductor Diedre Jacobson, who comes out fully nude.

Symphony in Blood Red: A Look At Italian Giallo (Includes a word from Dario Argento) (47:59) - Dario Argento and Daria Nicolodi each speak briefly about the film as well as give it praise. Next up, director Luigi Pastore talks about having the desire to shoot his first film for a long time. He also mentions his intention to not reveal the killers face because he liked the idea of evil without a face. Director of "Il Bosco Fuori," Gabriele Albanesi gives his thoughts on the films killer, mood of misery and originality. A number of others also speak about their role in the films production or just about the film itself including make-up and special effects artist Sergio Stivaletti, legendary music composer Claudio Simonetti (who also appears in the film) and actress Michela Foresta. (in Italian with English subtitles)

The Backstage (6:20) - A series of behind the scenes shots from the film including a few nice shots of the make-up effects.

The Sound Recording (:58) - A very brief look at some actors recording lines for the film.

Official Trailer (3:18)

A Minute With Dario Argento: A Make Your Own Damn Movie! Lesson (2:54)

Tromadance 2015 Highlights (5:20) - Includes brief clips of interviews with attendees and film makers.

Kabukiman's Cocktail Corner: Trailer of Troma's Latest Web Series! (1:56)

Faggot: A Music Video Directed by Lloyd Kaufman (3:14)

Symphony in Blood Red Claudio Simonetti

IN CONCLUSION:

While the film may not wow anyone, it was a nice attempt at capturing the essence of giallo films. The DVD has fair audio and video quality with a nice amount of special features including an interesting documentary with a number of interviews.

Theatre of the Deranged II - Blu-ray Review - Troma Entertainment

Time for another trip to the Theatre of the Deranged

Theatre of the Deranged II Blu-ray cover

Released by: Troma Entertainment
Release Date: October 13, 2015
Production Year: 2013
Region Code: A
Running Time: 1:30:45
Audio: English Dolby Digital 2.0
Video: 1080p (1.78:1 Aspect Ratio)
Subtitles: Forced English for "TAG"

THE FILM - [ 3 / 5 ]:

Damien Shadows and his sidekick Adam Lansbury introduce you to 5 blood curdling horror films, all of which are actually enchanted and / or cursed. Damien shows you how to ward off the spirits after each terrifying tale in this anthology. From demented sisters, to panty raids gone wrong, to killer mimes and bad periods, this film will take you on one wild ride

The film was directed by James Cullen Bressack, Shawn Burkett, Eric Hollerbach, Christopher Leto, Dustin Mills and Shane Ryan.

"Theatre of the Deranged II" stars Eri Akita, Mariko Wordell (“Tag”) / Olivia Blake, Lorin Dineen, Christine Kinsey, Elizabeth Lee, Cory A. Thrush (“Panty Raid”) / Jody Barton, Bailey Gaddis, Kirsty Hill, Alexei Ryan (“Unmimely Demise”) / Olivia Blake, Aaron Quick Nelson, Bob Glazier (“My Aunt is Coming to Town”) / Jackie McKown, Brandon Salkil, Allison Fitzgerald (“PlateFace”) and Eric Hollerbach as Damien Shadows

Please keep in mind this is an anthology, so the segments are short. I do not like to give spoilers so my descriptions will be brief.

"TAG" - Our first story revolves around two sisters and an unusual bond that they share that reaches farther than you might expect. Unfortunately I did not care for this story all that much. It felt like there should have been more to the story. It was interesting but just didn't work for me.

"Panty Raid" - In this segment we have a janitor with vile intentions who has an obsession with panties and visits some sorority girls in search of his prize. This was my favorite part of the anthology. It has a bit of an 80's feel to it in terms of the story and the humor, which is probably why I enjoyed it so much.

"Unmimely Demise" - The third tale tells the story of Cheeky the mime who has extraordinary powers and gets revenge on those who wronged him. Another fun film. I enjoyed the offbeat humor. It reminded me slightly of the 1980 film "Harlequin" which also featured a mime. Don't all mimes seems a bit "off." Maybe it's similar to how some people don't like clowns.

"My Aunt is Coming to Town" - Next up we have Erin, a young lady who meets Jeff and falls for him. A few weeks later, her aunt is coming and wants to meet this man her niece is seeing. Erin is so happy with how well the visit with her aunt went, she has a surprise for Jeff. This film went in a different direction at the end than what I was expecting, which I am not totally sure what I was expecting. I give it credit for avoiding a few moments where it could have taken the more traditional path in films where the viewer knows what is going to happen after seeing the same thing over and over.

"PlateFace" - In the final story we find a man who seems to be in love with a woman, but we see he also has his eyes on her daughter. This segment is dialogue free and features a "laugh track" which adds to the oddity of this short. I really liked the creepy feel to this film and the direction it was going. I did not particularly care for the ending though.

AUDIO - [ 3 / 5 ]:

"Theatre of the Deranged II" comes with a Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track. For a super low budget anthology, the sound is better than I expected. I thought the dialogue, sound effects and score throughout the segments were fairly well balanced. I did not encounter any jarring issues with the audio quality. The only subtitles included are forced English subtitles for the first film in the anthology, "TAG."

VIDEO - [ 2.5 / 5 ]:

"Theatre of the Deranged II" has come to Blu-ray thanks to Troma Entertainment. The film is presented in 1080p with a 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio. Keeping in mind that the production level was low due to its budget, the film look average in terms of video quality. I did notice some instances of banding and at times its budget limitations show. However, it is not totally fair to compare this to a large scale Hollywood film. So while it does not look as clear, crisp and artifact free as most big budget films, those that are fans of the film or independent films will most likely not have an issue.

SPECIAL FEATURES - [ 2.5 / 5 ]:

Intro by Lloyd Kaufman (4:10) This intro plays automatically when inserting the Blu-ray in to you player. Lloyd gives a brief intro on the film with a voice over adding in "part 2." There's also a bit with the Tromettes complaining about working on low budget films.

Panty Raid
  • Bloopers (3:40)
  • Audio Commentary with director Shawn Burkett -  A fun commentary where Mr. Burkett even says I'm just going to pause for a moment because you guys aren't listening to me. You're staring at the boobs. He talks a bit about the cast and production of his segment.
  • Trailer (1:34)

Unmimely Demise
  • Behind the Scenes (11:58) - A fun look behind the scenes of the production.
  • Trailer (1:14)
  • Slide Show

My Aunt is Coming to Town
  • Extra Footage (2:33) - More footage of the scene at the doctor office.

TROMoMA (11:40) - This featurette talks about "Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 1" being part of the "Contender Series" at the Museum of Modern Art. Members of the cast also perform a dance.

The American Cinematheque Honors 40 Years of Troma (2:03) - A montage of shots from several Troma films.

Radiation March (:56) - A very brief old dance performance piece that talks about the dangers of pollution.

Lloyd Kaufman's Anti-Bullying PSA (1:36) - Lloyd talks about bullying, while he bullies the crew.

Trailer (1:20)

Troma Trailers
  • "Return to Nuke 'Em High Vol. 1" (3:24)
  • "Return to Nuke 'Em High Vol. 2" (1:48)
  • "Troma's War" (2:31)
  • "The Toxic Avenger" (3:11)
  • "Pro Wrestlers vs. Zombies" (1:47)

IN CONCLUSION:

I have not seen "Theatre of the Deranged" but if you enjoyed the first round, I would imagine you will enjoy another helping in the sequel. I enjoyed it and would like to watch the first film sometime. A reasonably priced anthology on Blu-ray with decent audio and video quality plus a fair amount of special features. Order a pizza, pick up some beer and have a fun night!

Class of Nuke 'Em High 3: The Good, The Bad and the Subhumanoid - Blu-ray Review - Troma Entertainment

Time to go back to school!

Class of Nuke 'Em High 3 Blu-ray

Released by: Troma Entertainment
Release Date: October 13, 2015
Production Year: 1994
Region Code: A
Running Time: 1:41:15
Audio: English Dolby Digital 2.0
Video: 1080p (1.78:1 Aspect Ratio)
Subtitles: None

THE FILM - [ 2.5 / 5 ]:

Welcome back to Tromaville High!!! The only school in the country with a giant nuclear rodent for mascot, detention for melting and a bikini dress code. Wanna Hall Pass? Wanna Bus Pass? Wanna Pass Gas? You won’t pass up the mind-bending special effects! The Tromaville student body is in danger again… and it’s not of flunking. Tromaville is under attack from a subhumanoid army led by the evil Dr. Slag and his perfectly proportioned partner Professor Holt (a woman scientist with really big hair, portrayed by Lisa Gaye). On top of that, TROMIE the Nuclear Rodent is raging mad! 3 times the evil of the original! 3 times the mutated monsters of the sequel! With subhumanoid twins battling for Tromaville, more bodacious babes than ever and 3 times the nuclear meltdowns, it’s all action and excitement in CLASS OF NUKE ‘EM HIGH 3 – The Good, the Bad and the Subhumanoid!

Part three of the "classic" Troma film series, which has somewhat been renewed with "Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 1" as well as "Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 2" which will hopefully come out early next year. While this film may be heavy on the cheese factor at times, it is a fun movie. Troma deserves some credit for providing some quality practical effects despite a low budget that look much better than some films made today with their poor CGI. The film offers a variety of interesting characters and even a cameo appearance of a legendary Troma character.

AUDIO - [ 3  / 5 ]:

"Class of Nuke 'Em High 3: The Good, The Bad and the Subhumanoid" features an English Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track. I found the audio to be fairly clear with easy to understand dialogue. The sound levels were balanced throughout. I did not encounter any problems such as excessive hissing, pops or audio dropouts. While the audio track will not wow anyone, it does do an admirable job.

VIDEO - [ 3 / 5 ]:

"Class of Nuke 'Em High 3: The Good, The Bad and the Subhumanoid" comes to Blu-ray thanks to Troma Entertainment. The film is presented in 1080p with an aspect ratio of 1.78:1. Overall I think the video quality looks pretty good all things considered. The colors looked strong with reds really standing out. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of detail present. The film looks really good in close up shots. Skin tones look natural and vary in appearance. A fair amount of white specks appear throughout the film. There are some moments where the video appears a bit soft but that could very well be a result of how the film was shot.

SPECIAL FEATURES - [ 2 / 5 ]:

Intro by Lloyd Kaufman (4:26) -  When the disc starts up an intro with Lloyd Kaufman plays automatically. He briefly talks about the movie and twins, at which point a montage of breasts plays. For those wondering, I tested out the Top Menu button on my remote and was able to skip it.

Audio Commentary with Troma Fan Jeff “The Encyclopedia Tromatica” Heywood - On the menu it says Director Commentary but by listening to it, that really does not seem to be the case. After doing some research, I learned that on a previous DVD release, Jeff Heywood provided a commentary and I believe that is what was ported over. It is not a particularly good or informative commentary. Often he gets distracted by what is happening in the film and stops talking. He does at one point acknowledge that he has been distracted by what is on screen and thinking about other Troma films.
Interview with Troma Superstar Lisa Gaye (13:44) - Lloyd Kaufman interviews actress Lisa Gaye (Professor Holt).  They discuss how she got started working for Troma, her career and some of her memories while filming.

"Class of Nuke 'Em High" Saga Trailers - "Class of Nuke 'Em High" (3:12), "Class of Nuke 'Em High Part 2" (3:15), "Class of Nuke 'Em High 3" (2:26),  Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 1" (3:24), "Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 2" (1:48)

IN CONCLUSION:

If you are a fan of the Class of Nuke 'Em High series of films, you will want to also add this Blu-ray to your collection. For a lower budget film, the Blu-ray looks and sound quite good. It also comes with a few special features.

Scream Machine (2015) - Film Review - Deadly Indie Entertainment

Five Bloody Twisted Tales

Scream Machine DVD cover

After the Ebola outbreak wipes out the Earth’s entire population, Dr. Fry & Dr. Headly Graves bring you “Scream Machine”, the only form of entertainment left on Earth. As a gift to Dr Fry from his long lost friend Lloyd Kaufman come 5 twisted tales: “Sledgehammer”, “Cannibal Pen Pals”, “April Fool’s Party”, “Septic Shock” & “The Deadly Indie Drive-in”. Each tales features the three M’s of Horror -” Madness”, “Murder” & “Mayhem”. “Scream Machine” is guaranteed to make you faint, puke & quite possibly soil your pants!

The film was written and directed by Walter Ruether III, Paul C. Hemmes and David Sabal. "Scream Machine" stars Lloyd Kaufman, David C. Hayes, Brian Carr, Josiah Spargo, Tara Carlton, Scarlet Fry, Randy Robinson, Dineta Williams and Stephen Kessen.

"Sledgehammer"

The first film follows a minor league pitcher looking to make it to the majors. He's being scouted one day because supposedly his fastball is legendary. Through a bizarre accident another player is killed and then someone decides to seek revenge.

This was short and to the point. No playing around here. I enjoyed "Sledgehammer." The film was brief but included a couple of deaths, some cheap but effective effects and the acting wasn't too bad.

"Cannibal Pen Pals"

Next up we have a man who appears to have an infatuation with Jeffrey Dahmer, even to the extent that he is pen pals with the killer cannibal. The man also seems to have strange urges of his own and wastes no time fulfilling them with an unsuspecting victim.

I thought the acting in this one was pretty well done. Randy Robinson played his part perfectly, being very believable in his role.

"April Fool's Party"

In the third tale, we follow a group of friends that plan to play a prank on a friend. Little do the junkies know, he's in his house snorting cocaine which adds to his paranoia. As is normally the case, it's a prank gone wrong.

This segment didn't work for me at all. The story wasn't particularly good and it just made the sub-par acting stand out even more.

"Septic Shock"

A couple go to the doctor for a problem the man has been having. He gets good news and bad news. The good news is he seems to be healthy and okay. The bad news is that his wife and doctor have been in cahoots and have plans for the future that don't exactly involve his well being.

Well, can't say I enjoyed this one either. Once things get interesting it's mostly shots of the man in a septic tank which cut back to a flashback of the scene in the doctor office, which goes on way too long. That's about it until the scene at the very end that is more humorous than anything.

"The Deadly Indie Drive-in"

In the final story we find a couple at a drive-in. The woman sends the man off to the snack bar and promptly thinks that the radio is talking to her, telling her to kill the man.  I'll leave the rest to your imagination.

Sadly this film didn't really do anything for me either. The gore shots looked alright though for a uber low budget film.

RATING: [ 2 / 5 ]

"Scream Machine" started out well but unfortunately it didn't finish strong.
