Sinister 2 (2015) - Blu-ray Review - Universal Pictures

Bughuul is Back for More Children in 'Sinister 2'

Sinister 2 Blu-ray cover

Released by: Universal Pictures
Release Date: January 12, 2016
Production Year: 2015
Region Code: A
Running Time: 1:37:13
Audio: English DTS-HD MA 5.1
Video: 1080p (2.40:1 Aspect Ratio)
Subtitles: English SDH, Spanish

THE FILM - [ 3 / 5 ]:

In the followup to the 2012 hit horror film, a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon of TV's Wayward Pines) and her nine-year-old twin sons (real-life brothers Robert and Dartanian Sloan) find themselves marked for death in a rural house as the evil spirit of Bughuul continues to spread with frightening intensity. James Ransome, who played a deputy in the first film, returns and ends up trying to help save Courtney Collins (Shannyn Sossamon) and her young boys from the clutches of Bughuul. Director Ciaran Foy follows up his impressive full-length directorial debut "Citadel" with "Sinister 2."

This sequel could have easily gone the route of paint by numbers and give us a near-cookie cutter copy of the first film. What I liked was that we get a glimpse behind the curtain at the spirits of the children. We don't fully step in to their world like in "Insidious," but we do get to poke our head in the door. I think the film had a couple rather good scenes that unfortunately had their effectiveness spoiled due to their inclusion in the trailer. Ciaran Foy also touches on it during the commentary. As is sometimes the case, in an effort to make trailers more exciting and attract viewers, film effectiveness is sacrificed. It is why depending on the type of film, I try to avoid most trailers beyond the first one that I see. Anyhow, I enjoyed this film more than its predecessor. I did only watch "Sinister" one time so perhaps I need to watch it again. But as of now, I would say if you enjoyed the first film, I think you will be pleased with its sequel. I have read rumblings that a third film may be in the works which shouldn't be a surprise since nowadays if a film is a success, it's sure to get at least a sequel if not become a trilogy.

I thought the principal cast did an admiral job in their roles. I don't know if I have ever been disappointed with Shannyn Sossamon. She always seems to do a good job of playing a woman suffering in some way, from something. The Sloan brothers and the main ghost children did a great job, I thought. I appreciated their work more after seeing them being themselves in the making of featurette. Lea Coco also gives a nice performance in his small but effective role as Clint. He certainly makes it easy for the audience to hate him which is a good sign he's done his job.

"Sinister 2" supplies some wicked kill films, the first one (seen around 19 minutes in to the film) being my favorite. The creepy ghost kids gleefully share their films as they proudly admire their grisly handiwork. You can see a little more of the films in the special features section under "Extended Kill Films."  Sinister 2 still
AUDIO - [ 4.5 / 5 ]:

"Sinister 2" features an English DTS-HD Master Audio track. The audio sounded excellent on this Blu-ray release. The overall balance between dialogue, sound effects and score was well done. The dialogue can sometimes come off sounding a little quiet but I really didn't find it to be a big issue. The sound effects were used effectively to help create jump scare moments with sudden jarring effect. Some haunting music provided by tomandandy ("The Strangers") successfully helps set and further the mood. I did not encounter any problems with the audio while watching the film. The Blu-ray also includes English SDH and Spanish subtitles.

VIDEO - [ 4.5 / 5 ]:

Bughuul returns to Blu-ray in "Sinister 2" thanks to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The film is presented in 1080p with a 2.40:1 Aspect Ratio. The film looks very clean and detailed on this Blu-ray. It really shines in close-up shots with an increase in sharpness. A fair amount of the film takes place in areas of varying darkness and while the Blu-ray could have really faltered with its black levels and shadow detail, it instead did a wonderful job of providing deep black levels and an abundance of eerie and effective shadows. Colors were represented well, appearing strong without suffering from being over-saturated. Skin tones looked natural and pleasing as well. I didn't notice any negative issues with the video portion of the Blu-ray.

SPECIAL FEATURES - [ 3 / 5 ]:

Audio Commentary with director Ciaran Foy - I thought this was an entertaining and fascinating commentary. Mr. Foy is very technical and precise in his dissection of scenes as well as his explanations of mood and intent throughout the film. He talks about numerous aspects of the production from the cast, characters and script to special effects.

Deleted Scenes (9:22) - There are five scenes titled, "New Chain," "A Late-Night Warning," "Stupid Bird," "Lipstick" and "Stomberg's Last Drink." You can watch the scenes individually or consecutively via a Play All option.

Time to Watch Another: The Making of Sinister 2 (10:11) - Here we are treated to several brief snippets with a few members of the cast and crew regarding the film.

Extended Kill Films - Included are "Fishing Trip" (1:32), "Christmas Morning" (1:34), "Kitchen Remodel" (1:41), "A Trip to the Dentist" (:35), "Sunday Service" (3:05) and "Cornfield (3:11)."

Previews - Trailers for seven films are included with several playing automatically when the Blu-ray is first inserted.

This Blu-ray release also includes a Digital HD copy of the film.
Sinister 2 still
IN CONCLUSION:

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment once again delivers a great home video release that sports superior audio and video quality as well as several added special features. If you already own the first film then I probably don't even need to suggest adding this to your collection. I would recommend that those who were maybe a little unsatisfied with "Sinister" to rent this one from Redbox, DigitalHD, etc. as you may be pleasantly surprised.

The Visit (2015) - Blu-ray Review - Universal Pictures

What's Wrong With Grandma and Grandpa?

The Visit Blu-ray cover

Released by: Universal Pictures
Release Date: January 5, 2016
Production Year: 2015
Region Code: A
Running Time: 1:34:01
Audio: English DTS-HD MA 5.1 / Spanish DTS-HD MA 5.1 / French DTS-HD MA 5.1
Video: 1080p (1.85:1 Aspect Ratio)
Subtitles: English SDH, Spanish, French

THE FILM - [ 3.5 / 5 ]:

"The Visit" was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense). The film stars Olivia DeJonge (The Sisterhood of Night) as Becca and Ed Oxenbould (Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day) as Tyler, two kids who visit their grandparents for the first time at their secluded Pennsylvania farm. At the start of the film we learn that their mother, played by Kathryn Hahn (We're the Millers), left home amid an unpleasant situation and has not spoken to her parents since. Recently they contacted her and long story short, the kids wanted to go visit them with the dual purpose of getting to know their grandparents as well as giving their mother time alone with her new boyfriend as they go on a vacation.

The trip begins innocent enough with the typical pleasantries and thoughts of homemade food by grandma. I mean, who doesn't love that, right? But, it doesn't take long for grandma and grandpa to start exhibiting... odd behavior. As one might expect, things escalate as the children become more uneasy about their visit with their increasing strange grandparents. I won't spoil details of the film so you will have to watch it for yourself and find out what is going on.

I thought the actors in the film did a very good job in their roles. Olivia DeJonge was great as Becca and I imagine we will see much more of her in the coming years. Ed Oxenbould was very good as the annoying little brother. Whether it was intentional or not I don't know but I would guess that it was. Deanna Dunagan and Peter McRobbie as Nana and Pop Pop also gave fine performances and the film could have easily been hindered by poor acting but thankfully the film sports a cast that helped carry the film along with ease. Kathryn Hahn does a nice job but she has a rather small, supporting role in the film.

For a film that resembles a "found footage" style of shooting, "The Visit" doesn't have that shaky cam look that makes some of those types of films unwatchable. The camera does move around of course since the majority of the time one of the characters is carrying or holding it but you can probably get a good idea of what to expect from the trailer. I found the film to be enjoyable and an improvement on the last few films by M. Night Shyamalan. I hope this is the start of an upswing on his career.

Peter McRobbie and Olivia DeJonge in The Visit

AUDIO - [ 4 / 5 ]:

"The Visit" comes with several audio choices such as English, Spanish and French DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 tracks as well as a DVS (Descriptive Video Service) options. English SDH, Spanish and French subtitles are included as well. I thought the audio sounded very good overall. Dialogue was clear and crisp for the most part. The audio was well balanced throughout and the volume levels were stable. I did not encounter any problems such as hissing or dropouts.

Deanna Dunagan and Olivia DeJonge in The Visit

VIDEO - [ 4 / 5 ]:

"The Visit" arrives on Blu-ray thanks to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The film is presented in 1080p with a 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video quality was quite good and many will be relieved to find that it does not look like most "found footage" style films with subpar picture quality. Colors look beautiful and are very bold. The Blu-ray surprised me with the amount of fine detail in some of the close up shots, from the visible fibers on clothing to hair and facial features, the film looks downright amazing at times. There are times that I thought the film looked slightly soft but that could very well be a result of how the film was shot. I think viewers should be very pleased with how the film looks in general. Black levels seemed fine but were not particularly strong and I think the picture suffered most in the darker scenes where some of the detail seems to give way to a softer image and perhaps some black crush. Skin tones looked very natural and spot on.

Peter McRobbie in The Visit

SPECIAL FEATURES - [ 2 / 5 ]:

Alternate Ending (2:25)

Deleted Scenes (8:34) - 10 scenes in all with a "Play All" option. I really didn't think any of them added anything necessary to the film, so they're right where they belong. They are a nice addition though because people often want to see what was cut from a film.

The Making of "The Visit (9:56) - A candid interview with M. Night Shyamalan and a behind the scenes look at the film. Excerpts of some of the cast auditions are included as well.

Becca's Photos (1:13)

Deanna Dunagan in The Visit

IN CONCLUSION:

An enthralling, suspenseful film that looks and sounds good on the Blu-ray and DVD and Digital HD Combo Pack. If you are a fan of M. Night Shyamalan's early work or obviously all of his work, give this one a chance. I thought it was his best film in years and am hoping it is the start of a trend in his career.

Legendary and WB Pictures Announce Cinematic Franchise Uniting Godzilla, King Kong and Other Iconic Monsters

More Godzilla and King Kong On the Way

Godzilla

Following Legendary’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2014 success with the global reinvention of the Godzilla franchise, the companies have come together to create an epic, new shared cinematic franchise. All-powerful monsters become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary’s King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases.

The announcement that the reinvention of monsters continues was made today by Legendary CEO, Thomas Tull, and Kevin Tsujihara, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. The initial trio of films are 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island”; “Godzilla 2” in 2018; and then “Godzilla vs. Kong,” arriving in theaters in 2020. While Legendary maintains its new home at Universal Pictures, the “Godzilla” films remain in partnership with Warner Bros., who will now also distribute “Kong” as a part of this franchise. Production on “Kong: Skull Island” begins October 19.

Warner Bros. and Legendary released “Godzilla” in May 2014 with an agreement to release “Godzilla 2” on June 8, 2018. Both films feature the human Monarch organization. Shortly following Legendary's pact with NBC Universal, Legendary acquired rights to additional classic characters from Toho's Godzilla universe, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. This paved the way for developing a franchise centered around Monarch and anchored by Godzilla, King Kong, and other famous creatures.

When Legendary announced films centered on Godzilla and Kong, fans all over the world speculated these two characters might one day meet in the same film. Classic Toho monsters including King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan, as announced at Comic-Con 2014, may also join the Legendary pantheon of giant monster mayhem going forward.

“Audiences really responded to ‘Godzilla,’” stated Tull. “Today, I’m excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.”

“Working with our partners at Legendary, we enjoyed tremendous creative and commercial success with ‘Godzilla,’” said Tsujihara. “It’s great to be able to revisit these characters and help create a franchise with so many creative possibilities for filmmakers. Fans love these big, globally iconic films and it doesn’t get any bigger than this.”

About the Productions:
“Kong: Skull Island” stars Tom Hiddleston, Sam Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Shea Whigham, and Toby Kebbell. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and written by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy, and Derek Connolly, “Kong: Skull Island” will fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce with Mary Parent. Alex Garcia and Eric McLeod will executive produce. Warner Bros. will distribute the film in 3D and IMAX 3D on March 10, 2017.

“Godzilla 2” will be written by Max Borenstein and directed by Gareth Edwards. Legendary is producing with Mary Parent, and Alex Garcia will executive produce. The film is set to be released by Warner Bros. on June 8, 2018.

“Godzilla vs. Kong” will be released in 2020.

Have You Been Naughty or Nice? Check out the Trailer for 'Krampus'

Better hope you're not on his naughty list

Legendary Pictures’ "Krampus," a darkly festive tale of a yuletide ghoul, reveals an irreverently twisted side to the holiday.

When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers.

All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive.

Written and directed by Michael Dougherty ("Trick ’r Treat"), "Krampus" is co-written by Zach Shields and Todd Casey and produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, Alex Garcia and Dougherty. The film will be released by Universal Pictures.

"Krampus" will spread its yuletide terror in theaters on December 4, 2015.
