Asmodexia (2014) - DVD Review - Sharp Teeth Films

"All Hell Is About To Break Lose!"

Asmodexia DVD cover

Eloy de Palma is an exorcist pastor roaming the darkest corners of the country with his granddaughter Alba. Their mission is to help those possessed by The Evil One, an infection of the soul that is spreading fast. Each exorcism is tougher than the one before, and every battle reveals a piece of Alba’s forgotten past – an enigma that if unconcealed could change the world as we know it.

Asmodexia DVD screen capture

Ah, the Exorcism sub-genre of Horror, this day and age everyone and his second cousin has been possessed in a horror movie, there seems to be a new one every week. Before you know it, Tina who lives down the street with her Yorkshire Terrier and pet pussy will be exorcised in another straight to video exorcism movie.

This one however contains a totally new and interesting twist on the whole exorcism genre. This isn't your average 'pick up a shaky cam while some actress screams and contorts in ways that would make Brazzer's hire her', this is alot more intelligent and sharp than you may originally give it credit for.

Asmodexia DVD screen capture

Written and Directed by Marc Carreté this Spanish exorcism shocker is more than your average. There is the odd cliche here and there, the classics if you will, green puke fans will be pleased to know that it makes a cameo appearance, but overall it comes across fresh and original. The movie has a dark broody feel to a lot of it's shots and is expertly filmed and presented, there is some absolutely beautiful and stunning gothic camera work and sets at play here. Do not go into this movie expecting jump scares every 5 minutes and a massive body count as you will be disappointed, this movie is too intelligent and clever to have those kind of gimmicks. It's a dark and creepy exorcism movie with quite a few twists and turns here and there that keep you gripped.

Asmodexia DVD screen capture

All in all this is a good movie, a battle of good and evil with beautiful cinematography and expert direction, great acting performances and more twists and turns than a multipack of Twizzlers. I recommend this for all horror fans who like a bit of intelligence with their scares.

Asmodexia DVD screen capture

Sharp Teeth Films have brought Asmodexia to the UK DVD market in a bare-bones release, however the movie stands well on it's own as it is. The movie is in it's original Spanish with external English subtitles that are selectable from the main menu. The picture quality is very good, there is a slight touch of banding here and there but I am guessing this is down to the original source material that the DVD was authored from, it's not distracting or too noticeable tho. It's a nice clean and sharp print and the audio is clear and packs a punch when it needs to. Give it a try, it's definitely worth a look.

Septic Man (2013) - DVD Review - Sharp Teeth Films

"He's About To Have One Crappy Day"

Septic Man DVD cover

Jack has a good if somewhat smelly life. He has a beautiful wife and a lovely home in a charming town, and if maintaining that life means occasionally being coated in goo, he s fine with that. Jack s a plumber. A good one. And so when his town is stricken by a contaminated water crisis, it s down to Jack to find and solve the problem while the residents are evacuated to cleaner pastures.

But things don t go as planned. Sure, Jack finds the source of the problem deep in a long forgotten sewage treatment holding tank, but he s not alone in the plant and the unfriendly denizens trap him within the fetid tank with no food or clean water. And so begins a lengthy and repulsive transformation.

Septic Man screen shot

The opening of this movie is pure gross-out, if you have issues with vomit or bowel movements you may want to avoid eating your dinner around the time of watching. The movie itself is very sleek looking, great lighting work and excellent direction, this in itself takes what appears on the outset to look like your average Troma movie and raises the bar. I admit when I first got this movie to review I was expecting a modern-day Toxic Avenger, instead what I got was a movie that was more intelligent and slick than I originally gave it credit for.

Septic Man screen shot

The acting performances are surprisingly good and so are the make-up effects, the sound effects are the hidden gem within this movie, there is a particular scene which involves "teeth sharpening" the sound of which sent shivers down my spine. Yes the movie does have it's fair share of gross-out moments (well what do you expect from a movie called Septic Man), but it has a charm of it's own too. I have seen many reviews over the internet raving about this movie, saying how great it was and I can see what they mean. This movie is a cult classic waiting to happen, and once the audience discovers it I feel it will take off big time.

Septic Man screen shot

Septic Man is available now from Sharp Teeth Films in the UK. Sadly the DVD itself is a barebones release with only trailers for other releases on the disc itself. The presentation of the movie however is perfectly acceptable for a DVD release. As the DVD is in PAL format for the UK audience there is no signs of picture jitter (which can happen when an NTSC or FILM source gets encoded to PAL format), it's a smooth ride throughout. Audio is clear and sharp (especially the teeth sharpening noise *shudder*) and it is presented in Anamorphic Widescreen. All in all a beautiful image from Sharp Teeth Films. The only lacking is the extras.

Overall Rating: 3/5

You Are Not Alone (2014) - Film Review - Sharp Teeth Films

FPS: First Person Slasher

You Are Not Alone poster

I have just finished watching You Are Not Alone which is being released via Sharp Teeth Films for the UK market on 22nd February 2016.

An idyllic summer day becomes a living nightmare...
With school finally over, college graduate Natalie Wilner returns to her hometown to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend. But beneath the flags and fireworks lurks a dark, malevolent figure. After a night of drunken parties, she tumbles home and drifts off to sleep, only to be woken moments later by a loud knock at the door.
Experiencing one night of terror, through Natalie's eyes as she fights to escape a relentless, knife-wielding maniac.

You Are Not Alone still

Remember in the remake of Maniac where it was kinda cool to see the whole events through the eyes of the killer? Well this flips it, this time we see everything through the eyes of the victim, the similarity with Maniac kind of ends right there. This is a good twist on proceedings and I give them credit for not copying Maniac flat out, however this does mean we have to see a lot of Natalie's (the victim) life before the killer appears to do his evil killery things.

This sadly means 48 minutes of nothing much going on, we get to go to lunch with Grandma, a party, buy pot and hang around with 2 friends, who we never see again for the rest of the movie and stumble home. I do love slow horror, I really do, but this was a little too long of a build up for my personal liking but it does pay off, slightly, once the action starts.

You Are Not Alone still

Once all the partying, boys, pranking, and fireworks are done, Natalie stumbles (or ricochet's depending on your point of view when judging drunkness) home, passes out, good night everybody woohoo. However, she is rudely awoken by knocking noises, and instead of hiding under the blanket and hope it goes away she goes downstairs. Once downstairs she see's a creepy guy standing staring at the house (who strangely resembles an early Nick Cave). This is where the most tense part of the movie happens and i'm not ashamed to say I jumped a few times whilst also shouting "Run!" "What are you doing?!" and the like. The movie takes this route and runs with it for the rest of the runtime.

You Are Not Alone still

I don't want to give too much away about the movie as I feel the tension holds up on it's own once it hits it's stride. Yes there is moments where you shout at the screen calling this poor girl every name under the sun as she runs her way through the neighbourhood, but it's part of the movie's twisted ride. If you can get past that long slow opening (which to be honest doesn't really give you that much information) then you can enjoy the final part. It's a home invasion slasher seen through the eyes of the victim and it works, just. I would also like to give a shoutout to what is clearly a homage to Leatherface (you will know it when you see it), very nicely done.

It's worth a look and brings genuine tension (hey a reflection of a lamp made me jump out of my skin at one point I was that engrossed), not many questions are answered but not too many chances lost either. Worth a shot if you are at a loose end one evening.

RATING: 2.5 / 5
